SYNOPSIS. 1/1 Athens. A ball in Timon's house. A POET, a PAINTER, a JEWELLER, a MERCHANT and OTHERS display their products. SENATORS cross the stage. TIMON, VENTIDIUS' SERVANT, LUCILIUS and ATTENDANTS enter; VENTIDIUS' SERVANT secures TIMON's help and exits. An OLD ATHENIAN enters and TIMON promises to match his daughter's dowry; the OLD ATHENIAN and LUCILIUS exit. TIMON accepts the artisan's goods; APEMANTUS enters and vilifies everyone; a MESSENGER enters and announces Alcibiades; ATTENDANTS exit; ALCIBIADES enters, and all but APEMANTUS exit; two LORDS enter and speak to APEMANTUS who exits, followed by them. 1/2 Athens. A room of state in Timon's house. TIMON, ALCIBIADES, FLAVIUS, LORDS, VENTIDIUS and APEMANTUS enter the banqueting room; TIMON refuses VENTIDIUS' offer to repay him; APEMANTUS reviles the sycophants but TIMON rejoices in his friends. A SERVANT enters and announces CUPID and some AMAZONS who enter, dance with the LORDS, and exit. FLAVIUS exits and re-enters with a casket; three SERVANTS enter, one after the other, to announce the arrival of guests and gifts; FLAVIUS deplores TIMON's extravagance and exits; he is soon followed by all but TIMON and APEMANTUS, who speak. 2/1 Athens. A room in a Senator's house. A SENATOR condemns Timon's profligacy; CAPHIS enters and is sent to collect money from Timon, with interest. 2/2 Athens. A hall in Timon's house. FLAVIUS censures Timon's extravagance; CAPHIS, and the SERVANTS of ISIDORE and VARRO enter and speak; ALCIBIADES and LORDS enter with TIMON who is approached by his creditors; ALCIBIADES and LORDS exit; followed by TIMON and FLAVIUS. APEMANTUS and the FOOL enter and mock the SERVANTS; a PAGE enters and exits; TIMON and FLAVIUS enter; APEMANTUS, the FOOL, and SERVANTS exit. TIMON realises his plight and sends FLAMINIUS, SERVILIUS, and other SERVANTS who enter, to borrow money from his friends. 3/1 Athens. A room in Lucullus' house. FLAMINIUS and a SERVANT wait for LUCULLUS; LUCULLUS refuses Timon's request. 3/2 Athens. A public place. LUCIUS and THREE STRANGERS discuss Timon's fortunes; SERVILIUS enters and asks LUCIUS for a loan for Timon, which LUCIUS says he cannot raise; LUCIUS and SERVILIUS exit; the STRANGERS comment on his ingratitude. 3/3 Athens. A room in Sempronius' house. TIMON'S SERVANT asks SEMPRONIUS for aid, at which SEMPRONIUS feigns offence and exits; the SERVANT soliloquises on wickedness. 3/4 Athens. A hall in Timon's house. TITUS, HORTENSIUS, TWO SERVANTS of VARRO, LUCIUS'S SERVANT, and other creditors' SERVANTS speak; PHILOTUS enters and they speak; FLAMINIUS enters, fends off the creditors' SERVANTS and exits; FLAVIUS enters, scolds the the SERVANTS and exits; SERVILIUS enters, and speaks; TIMON enters, followed by FLAMINIUS, and rages at the creditors, who exit; TIMON orders a feast prepared. 3/5 Athens. The senate-house. The FIRST SENATOR and the SECOND SENATOR speak; ALCIBIADES enters and pleads for mercy for a friend; he is rejected and banished; the SENATORS exit and ALCIBIADES plans revenge. 3/6 Athens. A magnificent room in Timon's house. LORDS, SENATORS, and SERVANTS enter; the FIRST LORD and the SECOND LORD try to gauge Timon's wealth; TIMON enters with his ATTENDANTS and welcomes the guests, but soon turns upon them, chases them out and exits; the guests reenter to collect their things. 4/1 Without the walls of Athens. TIMON curses Athens and its inhabitants. 4/2 Athens. A room in Timon's house. FLAVIUS, the FIRST SERVANT and the SECOND SERVANT pity Timon's condition; other SERVANTS enter; FLAVIUS distributes his money amongst them; they exit and FLAVIUS decides to follow Timon. 4/3 The woods. Before Timon's cave. TIMON broods on man's corruption and accidentally strikes gold; ALCIBIADES, PHRYNIA and TIMANDRA enter and TIMON insults them; ALCIBIADES responds compassionately; TIMON gives them gold and the visitors exit. APEMANTUS enters and they abuse each other; APEMANTUS exits. Three BANDITS enter, looking for TIMON's gold, which he gives them, and they exit. FLAVIUS enters and offers to serve TIMON who first rejects and then believes in his devotion; TIMON gives FLAVIUS gold and sends him away. 5/1 The woods. Before Timon's cave. The POET and PAINTER enter, watched by TIMON; he comes forward, taunts them, gives them gold and drives them away. FLAVIUS enters with two SENATORS who ask TIMON for help; TIMON refuses and exits. 5/2 Before the walls of Athens. Two SENATORS and a MESSENGER anticipate the fall of Athens; the SENATORS enter with Timon's answer. 5/3 The woods. Timon's cave and a rude tomb seen. A SOLDIER enters and comes across Timon's tomb. 5/4 Before the walls of Athens. ALCIBIADES and his POWERS enter; the SENATORS cede to him and he promises to be just; a SOLDIER enters with news of Timon's death.
