Enter THREE WITCHES, who say they will meet with MACBETH after the battle. 1/2 A camp near Forres. Enter, DUNCAN, MALCOLM, DONALBAIN, LENNOX, ATTENDANTS and SERGEANT. A wounded SERGEANT describes Macbeth's courage against the rebels, then exits. ROSS enters and describes Macbeth's victory over Cawdor; DUNCAN tells ROSS to have Cawdor executed and have his title transferred to Macbeth. 1/3 A heath. THREE WITCHES enter and speak. MACBETH and BANQUO enter, with SOLDIERS at a distance. The WITCHES hail MACBETH as Glamis, Cawdor, and future king; they hail BANQUO as the father of kings; WITCHES exit. ROSS and ANGUS enter and tell MACBETH he has become Thane of Cawdor. MACBETH and BANQUO ponder the future. 1/4 Forres. A room in the palace. DUNCAN, MALCOLM, DONALBAIN, LENNOX, and ATTENDANTS enter; MALCOLM describes Cawdor's gallant death. MACBETH, BANQUO, ROSS, and ANGUS enter; DUNCAN thanks them, names MALCOLM his heir, and says he will pay a visit to MACBETH. 1/5 Inverness. A room in Macbeth's castle. LADY MACBETH enters, reading Macbeth's account of the witches' prophecy; she decides to spur his ambition. A MESSENGER enters, announces Duncan's visit, then exits. MACBETH enters; LADY MACBETH tells him Duncan must be assassinated. 1/6 Inverness. Before Macbeth's castle. DUNCAN, MALCOLM, DONALBAIN, BANQUO, LENNOX, MACDUFF, ROSS, ANGUS, and ATTENDANTS enter; DUNCAN and BANQUO speak. LADY MACBETH enters to welcome her guests. 1/7 Inverness. A lobby in Macbeth's castle. SERVANTS enter, then exit; MACBETH enters; he soliloquizes on murder, and decides against committing the deed. LADY MACBETH enters; when she hears of MACBETH's resolution, she again incites him to the murder. 2/1 Inverness. Court of Macbeth's castle. BANQUO and FLEANCE enter and speak; MACBETH joins them; BANQUO and FLEANCE exit. MACBETH experiences bloody visions; he exits to murder Duncan. 2/2 Inverness. Court of Macbeth's castle. Enter LADY MACBETH, who has drugged Duncan's grooms. MACBETH enters, and announces he has killed Duncan. LADY MACBETH exits, to place the daggers beside the grooms; LADY MACBETH returns. There is a loud knocking at the castle gate. 2/3 Inverness. Court of Macbeth's castle. PORTER enters, speaks, then opens the gate. MACDUFF and LENNOX enter, and speak; MACBETH enters and greets them. MACDUFF exits to wake Duncan; he returns with the news of the murder; MACBETH and LENNOX exit. LADY MACBETH enters, followed by BANQUO; they bewail Duncan's death. MACBETH, LENNOX, and ROSS enter, followed by MALCOLM and DONALBAIN; MACBETH tells them he has killed the guilty grooms; LADY MACBETH faints. All exit, except MALCOLM and DONALBAIN; they decide to flee Scotland, then exit. 2/4 Without Macbeth's castle. ROSS and AN OLD MAN enter and speak. MACDUFF enters; the three discuss Duncan's murder and Macbeth's coronation. 3/1 Forres. The palace. BANQUO enters; soliloquises. MACBETH, LADY MACBETH, LENNOX, ROSS, LORDS, LADIES, and ATTENDANTS enter, and speak. All exit, except MACBETH, who broods about Banquo. An ATTENDANT enters, accompanying TWO MURDERERS, then exits. MACBETH instructs TWO MURDERERS to kill Banquo and Fleance. 3/2 Forres. The palace. Enter LADY MACBETH, with a SERVANT, who soon exits. MACBETH, tormented, enters; LADY MACBETH comforts him. 3/3 A park, with a gate leading to the palace. The TWO MURDERERS enter, and are joined by a THIRD MURDERER; they speak. BANQUO and FLEANCE enter; BANQUO is killed, but FLEANCE escapes. 3/4 Forres. A room of state in the palace. MACBETH, LADY MACBETH, ROSS, LENNOX, LORDS and ATTENDANTS enter; MACBETH and LADY MACBETH welcome their guests. The FIRST MURDERER enters, reports to MACBETH, then exits. The GHOST OF BANQUO enters and exits twice, exciting guilt and terror in MACBETH. LADY MACBETH tells the guests that MACBETH is ill; all exit, except MACBETH and LADY MACBETH, who speak. 3/5 A heath. HECATE upbraids the THREE WITCHES; she instructs them on their next meeting with Macbeth. 3/6 Forres. A room in the palace. LENNOX and a LORD enter; they discuss Macbeth, and the fact that Macduff and Malcolm are in England, raising a force. 4/1 A cavern. In the middle, a boiling caldron. THREE WITCHES enter; they prepare a spell; HECATE enters, gives them instructions, and exits. MACBETH enters, and speaks; three successive APPARITIONS enter and speak to MACBETH; a fourth APPARITION shows him Banquo's heirs ranged as kings. The WITCHES dance, and vanish. LENNOX enters; he announces that Macduff has fled to England; MACBETH decides to sack Macduff's castle and have his family murdered. 4/2 Fife. A room in Macduff's castle. LADY MACDUFF, her SON, and ROSS enter, and speak; ROSS exits; LADY MACDUFF and her SON speak. A MESSENGER enters, and warns them to flee. MURDERERS enter and kill the SON; LADY MACDUFF flees and is killed offstage. 4/3 England. Before the King's palace. MALCOLM and MACDUFF lament the state of Scotland. MALCOLM tests MACDUFF's integrity. An ENGLISH DOCTOR enters, speaks, and exits. ROSS enters with the news of the massacre of MACDUFF's family. MALCOLM and MACDUFF prepare to battle Macbeth. 5/1 Dunsinane. A room in the castle. A SCOTTISH DOCTOR and a GENTLEWOMAN discuss Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking. LADY MACBETH enters, mimes washing her hands, refers to the various murders, and exits. The horrified SCOTTISH DOCTOR suggests Lady Macbeth see a priest. 5/2 The country near Dunsinane. MENTEITH, CAITHNESS, ANGUS, LENNOX, and SOLDIERS enter, on their way to join the English forces; they agree that Macbeth has few supporters. 5/3 Dunsinane. MACBETH, the SCOTTISH DOCTOR, and ATTENDANTS enter; MACBETH speaks. A SERVANT enters with the news of the enemy's approach; he exits; SEYTON enters; MACBETH prepares to arm. The SCOTTISH DOCTOR says that Lady Macbeth's illness is a disease of the mind. 5/4 Country near Dunsinane; a wood in view. Enter MALCOLM, SIWARD, YOUNG SIWARD, MACDUFF, MENTEITH, CAITHNESS, ANGUS, LENNOX, ROSS, and SOLDIERS. MALCOLM tells the SOLDIERS to camouflage themseves with branches cut from Birnam wood; MALCOLM and SIWARD speak. 5/5 Dunsinane. Within the castle. MACBETH, SEYTON, and SOLDIERS enter and prepare for the attack. SEYTON exits to investigate an uproar; he returns to say that Lady Macbeth is dead. MACBETH soliloquises on the futility of life. A MESSENGER enters and says that Birnam wood is approaching Dunsinane. 5/6 Dunsinane. A plain before the castle. MALCOLM, SIWARD, MACDUFF, etc., and their ARMY enter; MALCOLM arranges his forces for battle. 5/7 Dunsinane. Another part of the plain. MACBETH fights and kills YOUNG SIWARD, then exits. MACDUFF enters, then exits, seeking Macbeth. MALCOLM and SIWARD enter the fallen castle. 5/8 Dunsinane. Another part of the plain. MACBETH and MACDUFF meet; they speak, and exit, fighting. MALCOLM, SIWARD, ROSS, other THANES, and SOLDERS enter; SIWARD learns of his son's honorable death. MACDUFF enters with Macbeth's head. MALCOLM is hailed as King of Scotland.
