MARK ANTONY, CLEOPATRA, her LADIES, and their TRAIN enter, with EUNUCHS fanning CLEOPATRA; ANTONY and CLEOPATRA speak; an ATTENDANT enters, announcing the arrivals of messengers from Rome; ANTONY, CLEOPATRA, and their TRAIN exit. DEMETRIUS and PHILO speak. 1/2 Cleopatra's palace. Another room. CHARMIAN, IRAS, ALEXAS, and a SOOTHSAYER speak; DOMITIUS ENOBARBUS enters; they all speak; CLEOPATRA enters, seeking Mark Antony; all exit. MARK ANTONY immediately enters, followed by a MESSENGER and ATTENDANTS; the MESSENGER says that Fulvia, Antony's wife, was defeated in battle by Octavius Caesar; the MESSENGER exits, and a second MESSENGER enters with news of Fulvia's death. DOMITIUS ENOBARBUS enters; MARK ANTONY tells him to prepare to return to Rome. 1/3 Cleopatra's palace. Another room. CLEOPATRA sends ALEXAS to find Mark Antony; ALEXAS exits; CLEOPATRA speaks to CHARMIAN. MARK ANTONY enters; ANTONY and CLEOPATRA quarrel as ANTONY tells her he must leave. 1/4 Rome. An apartment in Caesar's house. OCTAVIUS CAESAR and LEPIDUS, accompanied by their TRAIN, read a letter from Alexandria and speak about Mark Antony. A MESSENGER enters with news that Pompey's forces are attacking Italy from the sea. 1/5 Alexandria. A room in Cleopatra's palace. CLEOPATRA, CHARMIAN, IRAS, and MARDIAN, soon joined by ALEXAS, converse. 2/1 Messina. A room in Pompey's house. SEXTUS POMPEIUS, MENECRATES and MENAS converse; VARRIUS enters, and says that Mark Antony is in Rome; they all speak. 2/2 Rome. A room in the house of Lepidus. DOMITIUS ENOBARBUS and LEPIDUS speak. MARK ANTONY and VENTIDIUS enter, followed by OCTAVIUS CAESAR, MAECENAS, and AGRIPPA; ANTONY and CAESAR speak, joined by the others; ANTONY agrees to marry Octavia, CAESAR's sister. SEXTUS POMPEIUS, MARK ANTONY, and LEPIDUS exit. DOMITIUS ENOBARBUS tells the others of Cleoptra and the luxuries of Egypt. 2/3 Rome. A room in Caesar's house. MARK ANTONY, OCTAVIUS CAESAR, and OCTAVIA, accompanied by ATTENDANTS speak; CAESAR and OCTAVIA exit. The SOOTHSAYER enters; MARK ANTONY and he speak; the SOOTHSAYER exits. MARK ANTONY speaks; VENTIDIUS enters briefly, and they exit together. 2/4 Rome. A street. LEPIDUS, MAECENAS, and AGRIPPA speak. 2/5 Alexandria. A room in Cleopatra's palace. CLEOPATRA, CHARMIAN, IRAS, and ALEXAS, soon joined by MARDIAN, speak. A MESSENGER enters and, after a time, reveals that Mark Antony has married Octavia; CLEOPATRA threatens the MESSENGER. The MESSENGER exits, and ALEXAS exits, sent after him to find out more news. 2/6 Near Misenum. SEXTUS POMPEIUS and MENAS, and OCTAVIUS CAESAR, MARK ANTONY, LEPIDUS, DOMITIUS ENOBARBUS, MAECENAS, and SOLDIERS, enter seperately; the three triumvers and POMPEY speak. SEXTUS POMPEIUS recognizes DOMITIUS ENOBARBUS; they speak. All exit, except MENAS and DOMITIUS ENOBARBUS, who speak. 2/7 On board Pompey's galley, off Misenum. SERVANTS prepare for a banquet. OCTAVIUS CAESAR, MARK ANTONY, LEPIDUS, SEXTUS POMPEIUS, AGRIPPA, MAECENAS, DOMITIUS ENOBARBUS, MENAS, and other CAPTAINS enter. The Romans, who are drunk, become even more so; MENAS, approaching SEXTUS POMPEIUS, offers to cut the ship loose, to capture the triumvers; POMPEY refuses. 3/1 A plain in Syria. VENTIDIUS enters, triumphantly, accompanied by SILIUS, other ROMANS, OFFICERS, and SOLDIERS; before him is borne the body of a Parthian prince; VENTIDIUS and SILIUS speak. 3/2 Rome. An ante-chamber in Caesar's house. AGRIPPA and DOMITIUS ENOBARBUS meet and speak; OCTAVIUS CAESAR, MARK ANTONY, LEPIDUS, and OCTAVIA enter; all speak about the imminent departure of ANTONY and OCTAVIA, then exit. 3/3 Alexandria. A room in Cleopatra's palace. CLEOPATRA, with CHARMIAN, IRAS, and ALEXAS, questions the MESSENGER, then pays him; the MESSENGER exits, and all speak. 3/4 Athens. A room in Antony's house. MARK ANTONY asks OCTAVIA to return to Rome. 3/5 Athens. Another room in Antony's house. EROS tells DOMITIUS ENOBARBUS that Lepidus has been arrested and awaits execution. 3/6 Rome. A room in Caesar's house. OCTAVIUS CAESAR tells MAECENAS and AGRIPPA of Mark Antony's doings in Egypt. OCTAVIA and her TRAIN enter; OCTAVIUS CAESAR and OCTAVIA speak, and OCTAVIA regrets the enmity between CAESAR and Mark Antony. 3/7 Antony's camp, near Actium. CLEOPATRA and DOMITIUS ENOBARBUS speak; MARK ANTONY and CANIDIUS enter; ANTONY decides to battle Octavius Caesar's forces on the sea. A MESSENGER enters, with news of a victory by Octavius Caesar; a SOLDIER enters and fails to dissuade MARK ANTONY from his course; ANTONY, CLEOPATRA, and DOMITIUS ENOBARBUS exit. DOMITIUS ENOBARBUS and CANIDIUS speak, until a MESSENGER enters and calls CANIDIUS away. 3/8 A plain near Actium. OCTAVIUS CAESAR and TAURUS speak. 3/9 Another part of the plain. MARK ANTONY and DOMITIUS ENOBARBUS speak. 3/10 Another part of the plain. CANIDIUS and TAURUS, with their armies, enter and exit, seperately; a sea fight is heard. DOMITIUS ENOBARBUS enters, followed by SCARUS; SCARUS says Cleopatra's fleet fled the battle. CANIDIUS enters; he says he will surrender to Octavius Caesar. 3/11 Alexandria. A room in Cleopatra's palace. MARK ANTONY, with ATTENDANTS, reproves himself for fleeing the battle. CLEOPATRA, CHARMIAN, IRAS, and EROS enter; CLEOPATRA and the others try to comfort MARK ANTONY. MARK ANTONY says he has sent Euphronius to sue for peace. 3/12 Caesar's camp in Egypt. OCTAVIUS CAESAR speaks to DOLABELLA, and THYRIUS, along with others; EUPHRONIUS enters and presents Mark Antony's peace terms; CAESAR rejects them; EUPHRONIUS exits. OCTAVIUS CAESAR sends THYRIUS with a message for Cleopatra. 3/13 Alexandria. A room in Cleopatra's palace. CLEOPATRA, DOMITIUS ENOBARBUS, CHARMIAN, and IRAS converse; MARK ANTONY and EUPHRONIUS enter; ANTONY speaks with CLEOPATRA, then exits with EUPHRONIUS. An ATTENDANT enters and exits, announcing THYRIUS, who enters. THYRIUS begins to present Octavius Caesar's message; DOMITIUS ENOBARBUS exits; THYRIUS continues; ENOBARBUS re- enters with MARK ANTONY. MARK ANTONY berates THYRIUS; ANTONY orders ATTENDANTS, who enter, to have THYRIUS whipped; THYRIUS exits with the ATTENDANTS. MARK ANTONY and CLEOPATRA quarrel. ATTENDANTS re-enter with THYRIUS, whipped; MARK ANTONY again berates him; THYRIUS exits. MARK ANTONY and CLEOPATRA are reconciled; all exit, except DOMITIUS ENOBARBUS, who speaks. 4/1 Caesar's camp at Alexandria. OCTAVIUS CAESAR, AGRIPPA, and MAECENAS enter, with the ARMY; CAESAR and MAECENAS speak. 4/2 Alexandria. A room in Cleopatra's palace. MARK ANTONY, CLEOPATRA, DOMITIUS ENOBARBUS, CHARMIAN, IRAS, ALEXAS, and others enter; ANTONY speaks to them with sad finality, and gives money to some SERVITORS who enter; ANTONY recovers his spirits. 4/3 Alexandria. Before Cleopatra's palace. FOUR SOLDIERS hear eerie music. 4/4 Alexandria. A room in Cleopatra's palace. CLEOPATRA, CHARMIAN, IRAS, and others attend MARK ANTONY, as he dons his armor; EROS enters to help. A SOLDIER enters, followed by a CAPTAIN and more SOLDIERS; after some talk, MARK ANTONY exits with the CAPTAIN and SOLDIERS. CHARMIAN leads CLEOPATRA to her room. 4/5 Antony's camp near Alexandria. A SOLDIER meets MARK ANTONY and EROS and tells them Domitius Enobarbus has deserted; ANTONY laments, and orders that Enobarbus's belongings be sent after him. 4/6 Caesar's camp before Alexandria. OCTAVIUS CAESAR, AGRIPPA, DOMITIUS ENOBARBUS and others enter; CAESAR and AGRIPPA speak; a MESSENGER enters with news that Mark Antony is on the march; all exit, except ENOBARBUS. DOMITIUS ENOBARBUS berates himself; a SOLDIER OF CAESAR's enters, with word that Mark Antony has forwarded ENOBARBUS's goods; the SOLDIER exits, while ENOBARBUS, crushed, seeks a hole to die in. 4/7 Field of battle between the camps. AGRIPPA and others enter and exit, in retreat. MARK ANTONY and SCARUS, wounded, enter; they speak; EROS enters and says the battle has been won. 4/8 Under the walls of Alexandria. MARK ANTONY speaks to SCARUS and others; CLEOPATRA enters; she and ANTONY speak. 4/9 Caesar's camp. THREE SOLDIERS overhear the dying words of DOMITIUS ENOBARBUS; they carry him off. 4/10 Ground between the two camps. Accompanied by their ARMY, MARK ANTONY and SCARUS speak. 4/11 Another part of the ground between the two camps. OCTAVIUS CAESAR speaks to his ARMY. 4/12 Another part of the ground between the two camps. MARK ANTONY and SCARUS watch the battle; ANTONY exits, then re-enters, with news that the battle has turned against them; SCARUS exits. CLEOPATRA enters; MARK ANTONY blames CLEOPATRA for the defeat; CLEOPATRA exits. MARK ANTONY speaks, then exits. 4/13 Alexandria. A room in Cleopatra's palace. In IRAS and MARDIAN's presence, CHARMIAN advises CLEOPATRA to retire to the monument and have Mark Antony told that she is dead. 4/14 Another room in Cleopatra's palace. MARK ANTONY tells EROS he feels like only a shadow of his former self. MARDIAN enters and says that Cleopatra is dead; MARDIAN exits, followed in a moment by EROS. MARK ANTONY laments his fate and calls on EROS, who enters; ANTONY asks EROS to kill him; EROS kills himself instead; ANTONY tries to kill himself, but is only wounded; DERCETAS and GUARDS enter; TWO GUARDS speak; the GUARDS exit; DERCETAS speaks; DIOMEDES enters; DERCETAS exits. DIOMEDES tells MARK ANTONY that Cleopatra still lives. Some GUARDS enter; MARK ANTONY speaks to them; they bear him out. 4/15 Alexandria. A monument. In an upper chamber, CLEOPATRA laments to CHARMIAN, IRAS, and MAIDS. DIOMEDES enters, below, with news of Mark Antony's fatal wound. MARK ANTONY, who enters borne by GUARDS, is hoisted aloft to the upper chamber; ANTONY and CLEOPATRA speak; ANTONY dies; CLEOPATRA faints. When CLEOPATRA wakes, she proposes suicide. 5/1 Caesar's camp before Alexandria. OCTAVIUS CAESAR, attended by AGRIPPA, MAECENAS, GALLUS, PROCULEIUS, and others, sends DOLABELLA to Mark Antony; DOLLABELLA exits; DERCETAS enters and says that Antony is dead; CAESAR and the others speak about Antony. A MESSENGER from Cleopatra enters; OCTAVIUS CAESAR reassures the MESSENGER, who exits, soon followed by PROCULEIUS and GALLUS; CAESAR speaks. 5/2 Alexandria. A room in the monument. CLEOPATRA speaks to CHARMIAN and IRAS. PROCULEIUS, GALLUS, and SOLDIERS enter, below; PROCULEIUS and CLEOPATRA speak; PROCULEIUS and two of the GUARD ascend to the room by ladder; GALLUS exits. PROCULEIUS prevents CLEOPATRA from killing herself; he and CLEOPATRA speak. DOLABELLA enters; he speaks; PROCULEIUS and the GUARD exit; CLEOPATRA speaks to DOLABELLA of Mark Antony. IRAS enters; CLEOPATRA speaks; IRAS falls dead. CLEOPATRA applies an asp to her breast, speaks, applies another to her arm, then dies; CHARMIAN laments.
