The DUKE OF CLARENCE enters, on his way to the Tower, under the guard of SIR ROBERT BRAKENBURY; the DUKE of GLOSTER and CLARENCE speak; BRAKENBURY joins in; CLARENCE and BRAKENBURY exit. The DUKE OF GLOSTER speaks; LORD HASTINGS enters with news that King Edward is ill; they speak; HASTINGS exits. The DUKE OF GLOSTER spins his web of evil. 1/2 London. Another street. The body of King Henry is carried on stage, accompanied by GENTLEMEN, and followed by LADY ANNE, mourning, and TRESSEL and BERKELEY; LADY ANNE speaks. The DUKE OF GLOSTER enters; despite the fact that he killed her husband and father-in-law, GLOSTER woos and wins LADY ANNE; all exit, except GLOSTER. The DUKE OF GLOSTER soliloquizes on his success. 1/3 The palace. QUEEN ELIZABETH, EARL RIVERS, and LORD GREY speak; the DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM and LORD STANLEY enter; all speak. The DUKE OF GLOSTER, LORD HASTINGS, and the MARQUESS OF DORSET enter; QUEEN ELIZABETH and GLOSTER quarrel. MARGARET enters; she joins the argument; the others turn against her; MARGARET curses them all, then exits; the others discuss her. SIR WILLIAM CATESBY enters, summoning the others to King Edward; all exit, except the DUKE OF GLOSTER. The DUKE OF GLOSTER soliloquizes; TWO MURDERERS enter; GLOSTER instructs them to murder the Duke of Clarence. 1/4 The Tower. The DUKE OF CLARENCE relates a dream to SIR ROBERT BRAKENBURY; CLARENCE falls asleep; BRAKENBURY speaks. The TWO MURDERERS enter; they speak to SIR ROBERT BRAKENBURY; BRAKENBURY exits. The TWO MURDERERS speak; the DUKE OF CLARENCE wakes; they all speak; the FIRST MURDERER kills CLARENCE, then exits with the body; the FIRST MURDERER speaks; the SECOND MURDERER re-enters; they speak, then exit. 2/1 London. KING EDWARD, gravely ill, speaks to QUEEN ELIZABETH, the MARQUESS OF DORSET, EARL RIVERS, LORD HASTINGS, the DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM, LORD GREY, and others; the DUKE OF GLOSTER enters; he speaks to the others, and tells them that the Duke of Clarence is dead. LORD STANLEY enters; he and KING EDWARD speak; KING EDWARD, QUEEN ELIZABETH and others exit; the DUKE OF GLOSTER speaks. 2/2 The palace. The DUCHESS OF YORK and the SON and DAUGHTER OF CLARENCE speak; QUEEN ELIZABETH enters, disheveled, followed by EARL RIVERS and the MARQUESS OF DORSET; ELIZABETH says that King Edward has died; the women mourn, DORSET and RIVERS sympathize with them. The DUKES OF GLOSTER and BUCKINGHAM, LORD STANLEY, LORD HASTINGS, SIR RICHARD RATCLIFF, and others enter; they speak about the crowning of Prince Edward; all exit, except GLOSTER and BUCKINGHAM, who speak. 2/3 London. A street. TWO CITIZENS, joined by a THIRD, speak. 2/4 London. The palace. The ARCHBISHOP OF YORK, the young DUKE OF YORK, QUEEN ELIZABETH, and the DUCHESS OF YORK speak. A MESSENGER enters, and says that Lord Rivers, Lord Grey, and Sir Thomas Vaughan have been imprisoned by the Dukes of Gloster and Buckingham. All exit, with QUEEN ELIZABETH and the DUKE OF YORK on their way to sanctuary. 3/1 London. A street. PRINCE EDWARD enters, accompanied by the DUKES OF GLOSTER and BUCKINGHAM, CARDINAL BOURCHIER, SIR WILLIAM CATESBY, and others; PRINCE EDWARD and GLOSTER speak. The LORD MAYOR and his TRAIN enter, greet PRINCE EDWARD, then exit; PRINCE EDWARD speaks; LORD HASTINGS enters; PRINCE EDWARD asks for his mother; the DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM, CARDINAL BOURCHIER, and HASTINGS speak; CARDINAL BOURCHIER and HASTINGS exit; PRINCE EDWARD, GLOSTER, and BUCKINGHAM speak. CARDINAL BOURCHIER and LORD HASTINGS re-enter with the DUKE OF YORK; the young YORK and PRINCE EDWARD speak to the DUKES OF GLOSTER and BUCKINGHAM; GLOSTER sends the boys to the Tower; all exit, except GLOSTER, BUCKINGHAM, and SIR WILLIAM CATESBY; they speak; CATESBY exits; GLOSTER and BUCKINGHAM speak. 3/2 Before Lord Hastings' house. A MESSENGER from Lord Stanley enters and summons LORD HASTINGS, who enters from within; they speak, and the MESSENGER exits. SIR WILLIAM CATESBY enters and determines that LORD HASTINGS is loyal to Prince Edward. LORD STANLEY enters; he and LORD HASTINGS speak; a PURSUIVANT enters; STANLEY and SIR WILLIAM CATESBY exit; HASTINGS and the PURSUIVANT speak; the PURSUIVANT exits; a PRIEST enters; HASTINGS speaks to the PRIEST; the DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM enters; HASTINGS and BUCKINGHAM speak. 3/3 Pomfret Castle. SIR RICHARD RATCLIFF accompanies EARL RIVERS, LORD GREY, and SIR THOMAS VAUGHAN to their execution; they speak. 3/4 London. The Tower. The DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM, LORD STANLEY, LORD HASTINGS, the BISHOP OF ELY, SIR RICHARD RATCLIFF, LORD LOVEL, and others plan the coronation of Prince Edward. The DUKE OF GLOSTER enters; he speaks with the DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM; the BISHOP OF ELY exits, shortly followed by GLOSTER and BUCKINGHAM; LORD STANLEY speaks; the BISHOP OF ELY re-enters, and speaks to LORD HASTINGS and STANLEY. The DUKES OF GLOSTER and BUCKINGHAM re-enter; GLOSTER and LORD HASTINGS speak; GLOSTER orders HASTINGS beheaded; all exit, except HASTINGS, LORD LOVEL, and SIR RICHARD RATCLIFF; HASTINGS speaks, hurried by LOVEL and RATCLIFF. 3/5 The Tower-walls. The DUKES OF GLOSTER and BUCKINGHAM enter, dressed for battle; they speak; the LORD MAYOR and SIR WILLIAM CATESBY enter; GLOSTER and BUCKINGHAM speak; LORD LOVEL and SIR RICHARD RATCLIFF enter, with the head of Lord Hastings; the LORD MAYOR is convinced by GLOSTER and BUCKINGHAM that Hastings was a traitor; the LORD MAYOR exits. The DUKES OF GLOSTER and BUCKINGHAM speak; LORD LOVEL, SIR WILLIAM CATESBY, and SIR RICHARD RATCLIFF exit, soon followed by the others. 3/6 The Tower-walls. A street. A SCRIVENER speaks. 3/7 London. Baynard's Castle. The DUKES OF GLOSTER and BUCKINGHAM speak; GLOSTER exits; the LORD MAYOR, ALDERMEN, and CITIZENS enter, seeking Gloster; they are followed by SIR WILLIAM CATESBY; CATESBY exits, re-enters, and exits again; GLOSTER enters, accompanied by TWO BISHOPS. The DUKE OF GLOSTER says he will not accept the crown; the DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM and the CITIZENS exit, but are called back, as GLOSTER changes his mind; his coronation is planned for the next day. 4/1 London. Before the Tower. QUEEN ELIZABETH, the DUCHESS OF YORK, and the MARQUESS OF DORSET meet LADY ANNE, who is now married to the Duke of Gloster, and the young LADY MARGARET PLANTAGENET; the women speak. SIR ROBERT BRAKENBURY enters, forbids them to visit the princes, then exits; LORD STANLEY enters with news of the Duke of Gloster's coming coronation; they all speak, the DUCHESS OF YORK telling the MARQUESS OF DORSET to flee. 4/2 London. The palace. The DUKE OF GLOSTER, now KING RICHARD, enters, with the DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM, SIR WILLIAM CATESBY, a PAGE, and others; RICHARD asks BUCKINGHAM to murder the princes; BUCKINGHAM demurs, and exits; RICHARD speaks to the PAGE, who exits. LORD STANLEY enters and reports that the Marquess of Dorset has fled. KING RICHARD, out of LORD STANLEY's earshot, speaks to SIR WILLIAM CATESBY, who exits; RICHARD plots next to marry his niece. The PAGE enters, with SIR JAMES TYRREL; KING RICHARD sends TYRREL to kill the princes; TYRREL exits. The DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM enters; he is ignored, then derided by KING RICHARD; all exit, except BUCKINGHAM, who decides to return home. 4/3 London. The palace. SIR JAMES TYRREL enters and describes the princes' murder; KING RICHARD enters; they speak; TYRREL exits. SIR WILLIAM CATESBY enters with news: the Bishop of Ely has joined the Earl of Richmond, and the Duke of Buckingham is raising a force against KING RICHARD; KING RICHARD speaks. 4/4 Before the palace. MARGARET speaks, then withdraws; QUEEN ELIZABETH and the DUCHESS OF YORK enter; they speak, joined by MARGARET; the women speak and lament; MARGARET exits; ELIZABETH and the DUCHESS speak. KING RICHARD and his TRAIN enter; he and the DUCHESS OF YORK speak; the DUCHESS exits. KING RICHARD convinces QUEEN ELIZABETH to help him woo her daughter; ELIZABETH exits. SIR RICHARD RATCLIFF and SIR WILLIAM CATESBY enter with news of KING RICHARD's enemies; RICHARD sends RATCLIFF and CATESBY to muster loyal nobles. LORD STANLEY enters to report that the Earl of Richmond's fleet is on its way; KING RICHARD tells STANLEY he must leave his son as hostage; STANLEY exits. TWO MESSENGERS enter, seperately, bringing news of growing rebel strength; another TWO MESSENGERS enter, with news of the Duke of Buckingham and the Earl of Richmond's disarray; SIR WILLIAM CATESBY enters and says that Buckingham has been captured, but the Earl of Richmond's fleet has landed. 4/5 Lord Stanley's house. LORD STANLEY sends SIR CHRISTOPHER URSWICK with a message for the Earl of Richmond. 5/1 Salisbury. An open place. The SHERIFF leads the DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM to execution; BUCKINGHAM bemoans his fate. 5/2 Plain near Tamworth. The EARLS OF RICHMOND and OXFORD, SIR JAMES BLUNT, and SIR WALTER HERBERT, accompanied by others, speak. 5/3 Bosworth field. KING RICHARD, the DUKE OF NORFOLK, and the EARL OF SURREY, accompanied by SOLDIERS and others, speak, then exit. The EARL OF RICHMOND, SIR JAMES BLUNT, SIR WILLIAM BRANDON, the EARL OF OXFORD, SOLDIERS, and others enter; RICHMOND and BLUNT speak; BLUNT exits; RICHMOND and others withdraw into a tent. LORD STANLEY enters the EARL OF RICHMOND'S tent; they speak; STANLEY exits; RICHMOND speaks. One after another, the GHOSTS OF PRINCE EDWARD, HENRY THE SIXTH, CLARENCE, EARL RIVERS, LORD GREY, and SIR WILLIAM VAUGHAN, LORD HASTINGS, the TWO YOUNG PRINCES, LADY ANNE, and the DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM enter and speak, first to KING RICHARD, then to the EARL OF RICHMOND. KING RICHARD wakes, and soliloquizes on his guilt; SIR RICHARD RATCLIFF enters; they speak. The EARL OF RICHMOND greets some LORDS in his tent; he addresses his troops; all exit. KING RICHARD, SIR RICHARD RATCLIFF, ATTENDANTS, and FORCES enter; RICHARD and RATCLIFF speak; the DUKE OF NORFOLK enters, rallying them to battle; NORFOLK shows RICHARD a derisive message he received. KING RICHARD addresses his troops. A MESSENGER arrives to say that Lord Stanley will not join them; KING RICHARD orders Stanley's son's death; he is stayed by the DUKE OF NORFOLK. 5/4 Another part of the field. SIR WILLIAM CATESBY speaks to the DUKE OF NORFOLK and his FORCES; KING RICHARD enters, wishing he had a horse. 5/5 Another part of the field.
