KING JOHN, QUEEN ELINOR, the EARLS OF PEMBROKE, SALISBURY, and ESSEX, CHATILLON and others enter; CHATILLON's claim to England on Arthur's behalf is denied by KING JOHN; CHATILLON and PEMBROKE exit. A SHERIFF enters, exits, and re-enters with ROBERT FAULCONBRIDGE and his BASTARD brother, Philip; the BASTARD abandons his claims as a Faulconbridge and is acknowledged a Plantagenet; all exit but the BASTARD who considers his changed circumstances. LADY FAULCONBRIDGE and JAMES GURNEY enter and greet the BASTARD; GURNEY exits; mother and son talk. 2/1 France. Before the walls of Angiers. KING PHILIP, LOUIS, CONSTANCE, ARTHUR, the ARCHDUKE OF AUSTRIA and their FORCES enter and meet each other; CHATILLON enters and speaks. KING JOHN, QUEEN ELINOR, BLANCH, BASTARD, LORDS, and their FORCES enter; the two sides talk. The FIRST CITIZEN speaks for the CITIZENS who enter upon the walls. EXECUTIONERS enter, speak to HUBERT DE BURGH and exit; ARTHUR enters and hears from HUBERT he must be killed; the EXECUTIONERS re-enter, but soon are dismissed; HUBERT repents; he and ARTHUR speak. 4/2 King John's palace. KING JOHN, the EARLS OF PEMBROKE and SALISBURY, and LORDS enter and speak; HUBERT DE BURGH enters; SALISBURY and PEMBROKE blame KING JOHN for Arthur's death, and exit with the other LORDS. A MESSENGER enters and speaks; the BASTARD and PETER OF POMFRET enter and speak; HUBERT DE BURGH exits with PETER OF POMFRET in custody; the BASTARD speaks and exits, followed by the MESSENGER. HUBERT DE BURGH enters and speaks with KING JOHN about Arthur. 4/3 Before a castle. ARTHUR enters on the walls, leaps off them, and is killed. The EARLS OF PEMBROKE and SALISBURY, and BIGOT enter and speak; the BASTARD enters and greets them; they are horrified to discover ARTHUR's body; HUBERT DE BURGH enters; the EARLS accuse HUBERT of murder, and exit; HUBERT and the BASTARD speak. 5/1 King John's palace.
