SYNOPSIS.

1/1  King John's palace.
     KING JOHN, QUEEN ELINOR, the EARLS OF PEMBROKE, 
SALISBURY, and ESSEX, CHATILLON and others enter; 
CHATILLON's claim to England on Arthur's behalf is denied by 
KING JOHN; CHATILLON and PEMBROKE exit.
     A SHERIFF enters, exits, and re-enters with ROBERT 
FAULCONBRIDGE and his BASTARD brother, Philip; the BASTARD 
abandons his claims as a Faulconbridge and is acknowledged a 
Plantagenet; all exit but the BASTARD who considers his 
changed circumstances.
     LADY FAULCONBRIDGE and JAMES GURNEY enter and greet the 
BASTARD; GURNEY exits; mother and son talk.

2/1  France. Before the walls of Angiers.
     KING PHILIP, LOUIS, CONSTANCE, ARTHUR, the ARCHDUKE OF 
AUSTRIA and their FORCES enter and meet each other; 
CHATILLON enters and speaks.
     KING JOHN, QUEEN ELINOR, BLANCH, BASTARD, LORDS, and 
their FORCES enter; the two sides talk.
     The FIRST CITIZEN speaks for the CITIZENS who enter 
upon the walls.
     The opposing factions exit; after some excursions, the 
FRENCH HERALD enters and proclaims his party's victory; he 
is followed by the ENGLISH HERALD who does the same; both 
KINGS enter with their entourages, and squabble; they are 
persuaded to betroth BLANCH to ARTHUR; all exit but the 
BASTARD, who soliloquizes on Commodity.

3/1  France. The French King's tent.
     CONSTANCE, ARTHUR and the EARL OF SALISBURY enter; 
CONSTANCE rages against the marriage.  
     KING JOHN, QUEEN ELINOR, KING PHILIP, LOUIS, BLANCH, 
BASTARD, the ARCHDUKE OF AUSTRIA and ATTENDANTS enter and 
speak; CARDINAL PANDULPH enters, excommunicates KING JOHN, 
and wrecks the alliance; BASTARD exits, followed by the 
rest.

3/2  France. Plains near Angiers.
     The BASTARD enters with the ARCHDUKE OF AUSTRIA's head.
     KING JOHN, ARTHUR and HUBERT DE BURGH enter; the KING 
consigns ARTHUR to HUBERT.

3/3  France. Plains near Angiers.
     KING JOHN, QUEEN ELINOR, ARTHUR, BASTARD, HUBERT DE 
BURGH and LORDS enter and speak; BASTARD exits; KING JOHN
charges HUBERT to kill ARTHUR.

3/4  France. The French King's tent.
     KING PHILIP, LOUIS, CARDINAL PANDULPH and ATTENDANTS 
enter and discuss the English victory.
     CONSTANCE enters, laments, and exits, followed by KING 
PHILIP; LOUIS and CARDINAL PANDULPH discuss strategy and 
exit.

4/1  A room in a castle.
     EXECUTIONERS enter, speak to HUBERT DE BURGH and exit; 
ARTHUR enters and hears from HUBERT he must be killed; the 
EXECUTIONERS re-enter, but soon are dismissed; HUBERT 
repents; he and ARTHUR speak.

4/2  King John's palace.
     KING JOHN, the EARLS OF PEMBROKE and SALISBURY, and 
LORDS enter and speak; HUBERT DE BURGH enters; SALISBURY and 
PEMBROKE blame KING JOHN for Arthur's death, and exit with 
the other LORDS.
     A MESSENGER enters and speaks; the BASTARD and PETER OF 
POMFRET enter and speak; HUBERT DE BURGH exits with PETER OF 
POMFRET in custody; the BASTARD speaks and exits, followed 
by the MESSENGER.
     HUBERT DE BURGH enters and speaks with KING JOHN about 
Arthur.

4/3  Before a castle.
     ARTHUR enters on the walls, leaps off them, and is 
killed.
     The EARLS OF PEMBROKE and SALISBURY, and BIGOT enter 
and speak; the BASTARD enters and greets them; they are 
horrified to discover ARTHUR's body; HUBERT DE BURGH enters; 
the EARLS accuse HUBERT of murder, and exit; HUBERT and the 
BASTARD speak.

5/1  King John's palace.
     KING JOHN, CARDINAL PANDULPH, and ATTENDANTS enter; 
CARDINAL PANDULPH crowns KING JOHN and exits; BASTARD 
enters, and speaks with the KING.

5/2  Near St. Edmund's-Bury. The French camp.
     LOUIS, the EARLS OF PEMBROKE and SALISBURY, BIGOT, 
MELUN, and SOLDIERS enter; LOUIS and SALISBURY speak; 
CARDINAL PANDULPH enters and tries to mediate; the BASTARD 
enters and speaks.

5/3  The field of battle.
     An ill KING JOHN enters and speaks to HUBERT DE BURGH; 
a MESSENGER enters and speaks.

5/4  Another part of the field.
     The EARLS OF PEMBROKE and SALISBURY, and BIGOT enter, 
and talk; MELUN enters and tells them of Louis' treachery. 

5/5  The French camp.
     LOUIS and his TRAIN enter; a MESSENGER enters with bad 
news.

5/6  An open place near Swinstead Abbey.
     HUBERT DE BURGH tells the BASTARD of the king's 
illness.

5/7  The orchard of Swinstead Abbey.
     PRINCE HENRY, the EARL OF SALISBURY, and BIGOT enter 
and speak; the EARL OF PEMBROKE enters; BIGOT exits; the 
rest speak.
     KING JOHN is brought in; he speaks with his son; the 
BASTARD enters, and speaks to KING JOHN.
     KING JOHN dies, and is mourned by the others.
