CHORUS asks the audience to forgive the inadequacies of the stage and to imagine the magnificent scenes described. 1/1 London. An ante-chamber in the King's palace. The ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY and the BISHOP OF ELY discuss a bill to raise revenues by attaching church property, and CANTERBURY's counter-proposal that King Henry reclaim the French dukedoms and their revenues. 1/2 The King's palace. The Presence-chamber. KING HENRY, GLOSTER, BEDFORD, EXETER, WARWICK, WESTMINSTER, and ATTENDANTS enter, followed shortly by the ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY and the BISHOP OF ELY; HENRY asks for an honest assessment of his right to France; CANTERBURY replies that HENRY has a right and a duty to it, and promises church backing. ATTENDANTS exit, and re-enter with the French AMBASSADORS; the AMBASSADORS present KING HENRY with tennis balls from the Dauphin; HENRY responds; the AMBASSADORS exit. 2/Prologue CHORUS describes the English preparations for war and a French plot to assassinate King Henry. 2/1 London. Before the Boar's Head Tavern, Eastcheap. NYM and BARDOLPH enter, and speak; PISTOL and the HOSTESS enter; PISTOL, who is married to the Hostess, and NYM, who was jilted by her, draw their swords; BARDOLPH draws and threatens them both; the fray subsides. The BOY enters; he calls the HOSTESS to Falstaff, who is very ill; the HOSTESS and the BOY exit. PISTOL and NYM draw again; BARDOLPH again threatens them; they reach an understanding. The HOSTESS enters and says that Falstaff is dying. 2/2 Southampton. A council chamber. EXETER, BEDFORD, and WESTMINSTER enter and speak; KING HENRY, CAMBRIDGE, SCROOP, GREY, LORDS, and ATTENDANTS enter, and speak. KING HENRY pardons a drunkard; SCROOP, CAMBRIDGE, and GREY are presented with proof of their treachery; they beg for mercy; HENRY, grieved by their betrayal, does not grant it; they ask for forgiveness and exit, guarded, to their execution. 2/3 London. Before the Boar's Head Tavern, Eastcheap. PISTOL, the HOSTESS, NYM, BARDOLPH, and the BOY mourn Falstaff; the HOSTESS describes Falstaff's death. The men take leave of the HOSTESS and exit for the army. 2/4 France. A room in the French King's palace. The FRENCH KING, the DAUPHIN, BURGUNDY, THE CONSTABLE OF FRANCE, LORDS, and others discuss the English threat. A MESSENGER enters to announce the English ambassadors; the MESSENGER exits with some LORDS. The LORDS re-enter, with EXETER and his TRAIN; EXETER asks the FRENCH KING to relinquish his crown or fight for it; EXETER says that France will pay for the DAUPHIN's insult. 3/Prologue CHORUS describes the English force sailing to France and besieging Harfleur, and reveals that King Henry rejected the French King's offer of his daughter and some dukedoms. 3/1 France. Before Harfleur. KING HENRY, EXETER, BEDFORD, GLOSTER, and SOLDIERS enter, with scaling ladders; HENRY stirs his men to the breach. 3/2 France. Before Harfleur. NYM, PISTOL, and the BOY enter; they wish they were in London. FLUELLEN enters and drives the others toward the breach; NYM, BARDOLPH, PISTOL, and FLUELLEN exit; the BOY decides not to follow them, and exits. FLUELLEN and GOWER enter, and speak; MACMORRIS and JAMY enter; they all speak; a parley is called by the town; all exit. 3/3 France. Before Harfleur. The GOVERNOR OF HARFLEUR and some CITIZENS stand on the walls; the English forces are positioned below. KING HENRY and his TRAIN, including EXETER, enter; HENRY demands that the French surrender, and describes the consequences of resistance; the GOVERNOR OF HARFLEUR yields; HENRY orders EXETER to enter Harfleur and behave mercifully. 3/4 The French King's palace. KATHARINE tries to learn English from ALICE. 3/5 The French King's palace. The FRENCH KING, the DAUPHIN, BOURBON, THE CONSTABLE OF FRANCE, and others speak; they are eager to fight King Henry and confident of victory. 3/6 The English camp in Picardy. GOWER and FLUELLEN converse; PISTOL enters and asks FLUELLEN to intercede for Bardolph; FLUELLEN refuses; PISTOL swears, and exits; GOWER and FLUELLEN discuss PISTOL. KING HENRY, GLOSTER, and SOLDIERS enter; FLUELLEN tells HENRY about Bardolph's plight; MONTJOY enters and asks HENRY to give himself over for ransom; HENRY says his army is weak, but it will fight, not surrender; MONTJOY exits. 3/7 The French camp near Agincourt. THE CONSTABLE OF FRANCE, RAMBURES, ORLEANS, and the DAUPHIN boast about their horses and the number of English they will capture; the DAUPHIN exits; the others speak; a MESSENGER enters and says the English are near. 4/Prologue CHORUS describes the two camps on the night before the battle. 4/1 The English camp at Agincourt. KING HENRY speaks to BEDFORD and GLOSTER; ERPINGHAM enters and speaks bravely; GLOSTER, BEDFORD and ERPINGHAM exit. PISTOL enters; he mistakes KING HENRY for a Welshman; PISTOL praises the King, makes threats agains Fluellen, then exits. FLUELLEN and GOWER enter; they discuss military discipline, then exit. Three soldiers, JOHN BATES, ALEXANDER COURT, and MICHAEL WILLIAMS enter; they speak to KING HENRY, discussing the King and the justice of his cause; HENRY and WILLIAMS disagree on whether the King will be ransomed; HENRY and WILLIAMS exchange gages and agree to quarrel later; the three soldiers exit. KING HENRY soliloquizes about the responsibilities of kingship. ERPINGHAM enters, seeking KING HENRY; ERPINGHAM exits; HENRY prays for strength and forgiveness. 4/2 The French camp. The DAUPHIN, ORLEANS, RAMBURES, and others prepare themselves for battle; THE CONSTABLE OF FRANCE enters; a MESSENGER enters and speaks; THE CONSTABLE proposes they mount; GRANDPRE enters and describes the ragged English army; THE CONSTABLE grabs a banner and leads them out. 4/3 The English camp. GLOSTER, BEDFORD, EXETER, ERPINGHAM, with his host, SALISBURY, and WESTMORELAND enter; the nobles say the English are outnumbered five to one; SALISBURY takes his leave and exits. KING HENRY enters; WESTMINSTER wishes for more men; HENRY says that the glory the few of them will win will be remembered every Saint Crispin's day. SALISBURY re-enters and speaks; MONTJOY enters, again asking for KING HENRY's surrender; HENRY says the English will either win or die; MONTJOY exits. YORK enters and asks to lead the forces into battle. 4/4 The field of battle. PISTOL captures a FRENCH SOLDIER; the BOY acts as interpretor; the FRENCH SOLDIER ransoms himself; PISTOL and the FRENCH SOLDIER exit. The BOY reports that both Bardolph and Nym have been hanged; he says he must stay and help guard the camp. 4/5 Another part of the field. THE CONSTABLE OF FRANCE, ORLEANS, BOURBON, the DAUPHIN, RAMBURES, and others enter, shamed by their defeat; they exit to die honorably. 4/6 Another part of the field. KING HENRY, EXETER, and FORCES enter; EXETER describes York's brave death. The French rally and attack; KING HENRY orders all prisoners killed. 4/7 Another part of the field. FLUELLEN and GOWER converse. KING HENRY, accompanied by his FORCES, including HERALDS, speaks to WARWICK, GLOSTER, EXETER, and others; MONTJOY enters and concedes defeat; MICHAEL WILLIAMS enters; MONTJOY exits with HERALDS. KING HENRY asks MICHAEL WILLIAMS about the gage in his hat; WILLIAMS exits; HENRY gives FLUELLEN Williams' glove, saying Williams is a traitor; FLUELLEN exits; GLOSTER and WARWICK exit after Fluellen. 4/8 Before King Henry's pavilion. GOWER and MICHAEL WILLIAMS enter, followed by FLUELLEN; WILLIAMS challenges FLUELLEN; FLUELLEN arrests WILLIAMS. GLOSTER and WARWICK enter, followed by KING HENRY and EXETER; HENRY identifies himself as the recipient of WILLIAMS' gage; WILLIAMS defends his behavior and is rewarded. A HERALD enters with the casualty lists. 5/Prologue CHORUS describes King Henry's entry into London and his return to France. 5/1 France. The English camp. FLUELLEN and GOWER converse; PISTOL enters; FLUELLEN forces PISTOL to eat a leek; FLUELLEN exits, followed by GOWER; PISTOL reports that the Hostess is dead. 5/2 France. The French King's palace. KING HENRY, BEDFORD, GLOSTER, EXETER, WARWICK, WESTMINSTER, and LORDS enter one one hand; the FRENCH KING, QUEEN ISABEL, KATHARINE, ALICE, LADIES, LORDS, and BURGUNDY and his TRAIN enter on the other; the kings greet each other; BURGUNDY pleads for peace; HENRY AGREES; all exit, to discuss the settlement, except HENRY, KATHARINE, and ALICE. KING HENRY woos and wins KATHARINE; the others re- enter; the FRENCH KING consents to the peace treaty and the marriage. 5/Epilogue CHORUS briefly describes King Henry the Fifth's achievements, and King Henry the Sixth's losses.
