The Parliament House. The DUKE OF YORK, EDWARD, RICHARD, the EARL OF WARWICK, the MARQUESS OF MONTAGUE, the DUKE OF NORFOLK, and their SOLDIERS congratulate themselves on their bloodletting in the Battle of St. Albans; YORK is seated on the throne. KING HENRY, LORD CLIFFORD, the EARL OF NORTHUMBERLAND, the EARL OF WESTMORELAND, the DUKE OF EXETER, and others enter; the rival claims to the throne are disputed. EXETER deserts KING HENRY for YORK. YORK threatens to arrest KING HENRY; HENRY agrees to make YORK's sons his heirs, in exchange for keeping the crown; he is admonished by CLIFFORD, WESTMORELAND, and NORTHUMBERLAND, who exit; those remaining celebrate the reconciliation of Lancaster and York, then exit, except KING HENRY and EXETER. QUEEN MARGARET and the PRINCE OF WALES enter; MARGARET and the PRINCE OF WALES berate KING HENRY, then leave to raise an army against the Yorkists; HENRY hopes to win back the loyalty of Clifford, Westmoreland and Northumberland. 1/2 Sandal Castle, near Wakefield. RICHARD, EDWARD, and the MARQUESS OF MONTAGUE convince the DUKE OF YORK to renew his campaign for the crown. A MESSENGER enters with news of Queen Margaret's forces; the MONTAGUE exits; SIR JOHN MORTIMER and SIR HUGH MORTIMER enter; battle preparations are discussed. 1/3 Field of battle near Sandal Castle. LORD CLIFFORD and his SOLDIERS confront RUTLAND and his TUTOR; the TUTOR is driven off; CLIFFORD murders RUTLAND. 1/4 Another part of the field. The DUKE OF YORK bemoans his defeat. QUEEN MARGARET, LORD CLIFFORD, and the EARL OF NORTHUMBERLAND enter, with SOLDIERS; they mock the YORK, then kill him. 2/1 A plain near Mortimer's Cross in Herefordshire. EDWARD and RICHARD fret about their father; a MESSENGER enters and tells them of the York's death; EDWARD and RICHARD plan to continue the fight for the throne. The EARL OF WARWICK and the MARQUESS OF MONTAGUE, with their ARMY, enter; WARWICK says his forces refused to fight the Queen's; a new campaign is planned, to be mounted against London. A MESSENGER enters with further news. 2/2 Before York. QUEEN MARGARET, LORD CLIFFORD, the EARL OF NORTHUMBERLAND, and the PRINCE OF WALES urge KING HENRY to be more forceful; he grants the PRINCE OF WALES knighthood. A MESSENGER enters with news of the Earl of Warwick's approach; against the others' wishes, KING HENRY vows to remain with the army. EDWARD, RICHARD, GEORGE, WARWICK, the MARQUESS OF MONTAGUE, and the DUKE OF NORFOLK enter, with SOLDIERS; the two factions argue, then prepare for battle. 2/3 A field of battle between Towton and Saxton, in Yorkshire. The EARL OF WARWICK, EDWARD, and GEORGE enter, in defeat. RICHARD enters; describing the death of WARWICK's brother, he rallies the others. 2/4 Another part of the field. RICHARD and LORD CLIFFORD fight; the EARL OF WARWICK enters; CLIFFORD flees. 2/5 Another part of the field. KING HENRY soliloquizes on the pleasures of peasant life. A SON THAT HAS KILLED HIS FATHER, and then A FATHER THAT HAS KILLED HIS SON enter and lament; KING HENRY comments; the SON and FATHER exit. QUEEN MARGARET, the PRINCE OF WALES, and the DUKE OF EXETER enter, urging KING HENRY to flee with them. 2/6 Another part of the field. LORD CLIFFORD, wounded, soliloquizes on his doom. EDWARD, RICHARD, GEORGE, the EARL OF WARWICK, and the MARQUESS OF MONTAGUE enter, with SOLDIERS; CLIFFORD dies; the Yorkists mock his corpse. EDWARD's coronation and WARWICK's mission to France are planned; RICHARD becomes DUKE OF GLOSTER and GEORGE is made DUKE OF CLARENCE. 3/1 A close in the north of England. Two KEEPERS come across KING HENRY; HENRY recounts the events following Edward's crowning; the KEEPERS capture him. 3/2 London. A room in the palace. The DUKE OF GLOSTER and the DUKE OF CLARENCE look on and comment as KING EDWARD tries to coerce LADY GREY. A NOBLEMAN enters with news of King Henry's capture; all exit, except GLOSTER, who soliloquizes on his own monstrousness. 3/3 France. The king's palace. QUEEN MARGARET, accompanied by the PRINCE OF WALES and the EARL OF OXFORD, asks KING LOUIS, who is with BONA and BOURBON, for aid. The EARL OF WARWICK enters; he asks KING LOUIS for BONA's hand for King Edward; LOUIS and BONA agree. A POST enters, with letters for WARWICK, KING LOUIS, and QUEEN MARGARET, announcing King Edward's marriage to Lady Grey. KING LOUIS, angered, pledges aid to QUEEN MARGARET; WARWICK, humiliated, changes sides and becomes MARGARET's champion; the POST exits with this news. The PRINCE OF WALES agrees to marry WARWICK's daughter; all exit, except WARWICK, who vents his ire against King Edward. 4/1 London. The palace. The DUKE OF GLOSTER and the DUKE OF CLARENCE, accompanied by the DUKE OF SOMERSET and the MARQUESS OF MONTAGUE, deride King Edward's impolitic marriage. KING EDWARD, LADY GREY as QUEEN ELIZABETH, the EARL OF PEMBROKE, LORD STAFFORD, and LORD HASTINGS enter, attended; GLOSTER, CLARENCE, and MONTAGUE berate EDWARD; QUEEN ELIZABETH fails to make peace; CLARENCE says he will desert his brother's cause. A POST enters and describes the reactions in France to the marriage; KING EDWARD vows to fight; CLARENCE exits to join the Earl of Warwick; SOMERSET does the same; GLOSTER remains with EDWARD; EDWARD sends PEMBROKE and STAFFORD to levy an army; MONTAGUE and HASTINGS express their loyalty. 4/2 A plain in Warwickshire. The EARL OF WARWICK and the EARL OF OXFORD greet the DUKE OF CLARENCE and the DUKE OF SOMERSET, who enter; WARWICK promises his other daughter in marriage to CLARENCE; they go to attack King Edward, pledging allegiance to King Henry. 4/3 Edward's camp, near Warwick. THREE WATCHMEN, guarding King Edward's tent, shoot the breeze; the EARL OF WARWICK, the DUKE OF CLARENCE, the DUKE OF SOMERSET, the EARL OF OXFORD, and French SOLDIERS sneak up on them and attack; all exit, then WARWICK and the others return, carrying in KING EDWARD; WARWICK uncrowns EDWARD, and he is taken out, prisoner; the rest march on to London. 4/4 London. The palace. QUEEN ELIZABETH, who has heard of King Edward's capture, asks LORD RIVERS to help her escape. 4/5 A park near Middleham Castle in Yorkshire. The DUKE OF GLOSTER, LORD HASTINGS, SIR WILLIAM STANLEY, and others, await King Edward. KING EDWARD and a HUNTSMAN enter; EDWARD is rescued and sent to Flanders; the HUNTSMAN decides to accompany him. 4/6 London. The Tower. KING HENRY, freed from the Tower by the EARL OF WARWICK, the DUKE OF CLARENCE, the DUKE OF SOMERSET, the MARQUESS OF MONTAGUE, the EARL OF OXFORD, and the EARL OF RICHMOND, pardons and compliments the LIEUTENANT OF THE TOWER. WARWICK assumes control of the realm and appoints CLARENCE Protector; King Edward is proclaimed a traitor. KING HENRY enumerates the noble qualities of RICHMOND. A POST enters and announces King Edward's escape; all exit, except SOMERSET, OXFORD, and RICHMOND, whose safekeeping is arranged. 4/7 Before York. KING EDWARD, the DUKE OF GLOSTER, and LORD HASTINGS, with their SOLDIERS, find the city's gates locked. The MAYOR OF YORK, with his BRETHREN on the walls, proclaims loyalty to King Henry; pretending amity with Henry, KING EDWARD and the others are granted entry by the MAYOR and TWO ALDERMEN. SIR JOHN MONTGOMERY and his SOLDIERS enter to aid KING EDWARD who, after some hesitation, admits he wants to regain the throne; a SOLDIER proclaims him "Edward the Fourth". 4/8 London. The palace. KING HENRY, the EARL OF WARWICK, the DUKE OF CLARENCE, the MARQUESS OF MONTAGUE, LORD CLIFFORD, the DUKE OF EXETER, and the EARL OF OXFORD discuss King Edward's advance; all exit, to gather their forces, except HENRY and EXETER, who discuss Edward's popularity. KING EDWARD and the DUKE OF GLOSTER enter, with SOLDIERS; KING HENRY is taken prisoner. 5/1 Coventry. The EARL OF WARWICK, on the walls, receives reports from TWO MESSENGERS; SIR JOHN SOMERVILLE enters with news of Clarence. KING EDWARD and the DUKE OF GLOSTER enter, with SOLDIERS; they demand WARWICK's surrender; WARWICK defies them. The EARL OF OXFORD and his FORCES enter, followed by the MARQUESS OF MONTAGUE and the DUKE OF SOMERSET and their FORCES, all declaring for Lancaster. The DUKE OF CLARENCE enters, but abandons WARWICK's cause for his brother's; battle preparations commence. 5/2 A field of battle near Barnet. KING EDWARD lugs in the wounded EARL OF WARWICK, then exits; WARWICK prepares for death. The EARL OF OXFORD and the DUKE OF SOMERSET enter with news of the Marquess of Montague's death, and the landing of Queen Margaret's reinforcements; WARWICK dies. 5/3 Another part of the field. KING EDWARD enters in triumph, accompanied by the DUKE OF GLOSTER, the DUKE OF CLARENCE, and his other allies; they prepare to battle Queen Margaret. 5/4 Plains near Tewksbury. QUEEN MARGARET, seconded by the PRINCE OF WALES, urges the EARL OF OXFORD and the DUKE OF SOMERSET to take the places of Clarence and Montague. A MESSENGER enters with news of the approach of King Edward. KING EDWARD, the DUKE OF GLOSTER, the DUKE OF CLARENCE, and their FORCES enter; QUEEN MARGARET and KING EDWARD exhort their armies to fight. 5/5 Another part of the field. KING EDWARD, with the DUKE OF GLOSTER, the DUKE OF CLARENCE, and SOLDIERS, have captured QUEEN MARGARET, the EARL OF OXFORD, and the DUKE OF SOMERSET; OXFORD and SOMERSET are led off. SOLDIERS enter, leading the PRINCE OF WALES; the PRINCE OF WALES defiantly demands KING EDWARD's allegiance; he is stabbed to death by KING EDWARD, GLOSTER, and CLARENCE; QUEEN MARGARET swoons. GLOSTER exits in haste to the Tower. QUEEN MARGARET mourns her son; she is taken away; KING EDWARD and CLARENCE depart for London. 5/6 London. The Tower. The DUKE OF GLOSTER, with KING HENRY on the walls, sends away the LIEUTENANT OF THE TOWER. KING HENRY mourns the death of his son and excoriates the GLOSTER; GLOSTER kills HENRY, then soliloquizes on his own evil ambitions. 5/7 London. The palace. KING EDWARD celebrates the peace with QUEEN ELIZABETH, the DUKE OF GLOSTER, the DUKE OF CLARENCE, LORD HASTINGS, and ATTENDANTS; EDWARD asks GLOSTER and CLARENCE to kiss the young PRINCE, who is with a NURSE. KING EDWARD exiles Queen Margaret to France.
