A room of state in the palace. The DUKE OF SUFFOLK introduces KING HENRY to QUEEN MARGARET in the presence of the DUKE OF GLOSTER, CARDINAL BEAUFORT, the EARL OF WARWICK, the DUKE OF YORK, the EARL OF SALISBURY, the DUKE OF SOMERSET, and the DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM; the wedding terms are read; KING HENRY, QUEEN MARGARET, and SUFFOLK exit. The DUKE OF GLOSTER rages against the pact, joined by most of the others, then exits; CARDINAL BEAUFORT speaks against GLOSTER, then exits; the DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM and the DUKE OF SOMERSET speak, then exit; the EARL OF SALISBURY and the EARL OF WARWICK speak, then exit; the DUKE OF YORK tells himself to be patient. 1/2 London. The Duke of Gloster's house. The DUKE OF GLOSTER rejects the DUCHESS OF GLOSTER'S ambitions; A MESSENGER comes from the kind to request GLOSTER'S presence falconing; GLOSTER leaves with the MESSENGER. The DUCHESS OF GLOSTER calls JOHN HUME, who enters and tells the DUCHESS of plans to meet with Margery Jourdain; when the DUCHESS exits, HUME reveals his true designs. 1/3 London. The palace. PETER and other PETITIONERS assume the DUKE OF SUFFOLK is the Duke of Gloster when he enters with QUEEN MARGARET; the petitions are against the York faction, and SUFFOLK tears them up; PETER is lead off by a SERVANT; the other PETITIONERS exit. The DUKE OF SUFFOLK and QUEEN MARGARET revile the Duke and Duchess of Gloster. KING HENRY, the DUKE OF GLOSTER, CARDINAL BEAUFORT, the DUKE OF YORK, the DUKE OF SOMERSET, the EARL OF WARWICK, the EARL OF SALISBURY, the DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM, and the DUCHESS OF GLOSTER enter, arguing over the regency of France; the disputants turn on GLOSTER, who exits. QUEEN MARGARET humiliates the DUCHESS OF GLOSTER, who loses her temper, then exits; the DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM follows her. The DUKE OF GLOSTER enters, and the argument resumes. THOMAS HORNER and PETER are brought in, and questioned by KING HENRY and others; the DUKE OF GLOSTER accedes to the Duke of Somerset's regency; a duel between HORNER and PETER is scheduled. 1/4 London. Gloster's garden. JOHN HUME conducts in MARGERY JOURDAIN, SOUTHWELL, and BOLINGBROKE, then exits. The DUCHESS OF GLOSTER enters, followed by JOHN HUME; a ceremony is performed; A SPIRIT enters, is questioned by the others, then exits. The DUKE OF YORK and the DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM enter with their GUARD and arrest them all; they are lead off; YORK and BUCKINGHAM speak. 2/1 Saint Alban's. While falconing with KING HENRY and QUEEN MARGARET, and FALCONERS present, CARDINAL BEAUFORT and the DUKE OF SUFFOLK pick a quarrel with the DUKE OF GLOSTER. A TOWNSMAN enters, crying "Miracle!" and is questioned by KING HENRY and the nobles; the MAYOR of Saint Alban's enters, then SAUNDER SIMPCOX, who is carried in a chair; a throng, which includes SIMPCOX'S WIFE, follows; SIMPCOX is questioned by KING HENRY and the nobles, and is uncovered as a fraud by the DUKE OF GLOSTER, who calls in A BEADLE; SIMPCOX exits, followed first by the crowd, then by the MAYOR, the BEADLE, the WIFE, and others. The DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM enters and announces the Duchess of Gloster's arrest; the DUKE OF GLOSTER sadly temporizes. 2/2 London. The Duke of York's garden. The DUKE OF YORK explains his position to the EARL OF WARWICK and the EARL OF SALISBURY; they join with him. 2/3 A hall of justice. KING HENRY pronounces judgement on the DUCHESS OF GLOSTER, MARGERY JOURDAIN, SOUTHWELL, JOHN HUME, and BOLINGBROKE, in the presence of the DUKE OF GLOSTER, the DUKE OF YORK, the DUKE OF SUFFOLK, and the EARL OF SALISBURY; the condemned exit. The DUKE OF GLOSTER mourns, and resigns; the others speak. THOMAS HORNER and PETER enter, accompanied by NEIGHBOURS and PRENTICES; the nobles urge them to blows; PETER kills HORNER. 2/4 A street. The DUKE OF GLOSTER and SERVING-MEN await the passage of the DUCHESS OF GLOSTER; she enters, guarded by SIR JOHN STANLEY, THE SHERIFF, and OFFICERS; GLOSTER and the DUCHESS have an emotional encounter. A HERALD summons the DUKE OF GLOSTER to Parliament. The DUKE OF GLOSTER exits, after giving the DUCHESS OF GLOSTER over to the care of SIR JOHN STANLEY; STANLEY takes the DUCHESS into exile. 3/1 The Abbey at Bury St. Edmund's. QUEEN MARGARET, the DUKE OF SUFFOLK, CARDINAL BEAUFORT, and the DUKE OF YORK slander the Duke of Gloster to KING HENRY, the DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM, the EARL OF WARWICK, and the EARL OF SALISBURY. The DUKE OF SOMERSET enters and announces further losses in France. The DUKE OF GLOSTER enters and is arrested; he derides the nobles, and is led out. KING HENRY, upset, abandons Parliament. QUEEN MARGARET, the DUKE OF SUFFOLK, CARDINAL BEAUFORT, and the DUKE OF YORK plot the Gloster's murder. A POST announces rebellion in Ireland; after a spat between the DUKE OF YORK and the DUKE OF SOMERSET, YORK is sent by CARDINAL BEAUFORT to put it down. All exit except the DUKE OF YORK, who plots his attempt on the throne with the aid of Jack Cade. 3/2 Bury St. Edmund's. A room of state. TWO MURDERERS run in, having dispatched the Duke of Gloster; the DUKE OF SUFFOLK enters; the MURDERERS report to him, then exit. KING HENRY, QUEEN MARGARET, CARDINAL BEAUFORT, the DUKE OF SOMERSET, LORDS, and others enter; KING HENRY sends the DUKE OF SUFFOLK to fetch Gloster. As KING HENRY and QUEEN MARGARET speak, the DUKE OF SUFFOLK re-enters with news of the duke's death; KING HENRY faints and revives; QUEEN MARGARET emotes. The EARL OF WARWICK and the EARL OF SALISBURY enter, with many COMMONS; KING HENRY sends WARWICK to view the dead duke; WARWICK reveals the corpse; the DUKE OF SUFFOLK and WARWICK quarrel over the post-mortem; after CARDINAL BEAUFORT, the DUKE OF SOMERSET, and others exit, the quarrel continues; SUFFOLK and WARWICK exit, and return, swords drawn. The EARL OF SALISBURY speaks to the COMMONS; the COMMONS wring a condemnation of the DUKE OF SUFFOLK from KING HENRY. QUEEN MARGARET pleads for the DUKE OF SUFFOLK; all exit except QUEEN MARGARET and SUFFOLK, who bewail SUFFOLK'S fate; VAUX enters, describes the mortal illness of Cardinal Beaufort, and exits. QUEEN MARGARET and the DUKE OF SUFFOLK express their mutual devotion and part. 3/3 The Cardinal's bedchamber. CARDINAL BEAUFORT dies in guilt, watched by KING HENRY, the EARL OF SALISBURY, and the EARL OF WARWICK. 4/1 The coast of Kent. Following a sea battle, A CAPTAIN, A MASTER, A MASTER'S-MATE, WALTER WHITMORE and others enter with the DUKE OF SUFFOLK and TWO GENTLEMEN under guard; after some discussion, SUFFOLK is killed. 4/2 Blackheath. GEORGE BEVIS and JOHN HOLLAND discuss Jack Cade's rebellion. JACK CADE, DICK the Butcher, SMITH the Weaver, a SAWYER, and many others enter; CADE addresses the throng, to cynical asides. The CLERK OF CHATHAM is brought in, sentenced by JACK CADE, and taken out. MICHAEL enters, warning of the Staffords' approach; SIR HUMPHREY STAFFORD, his BROTHER, and SOLIDERS enter; STAFFORD and JACK CADE parley, then exit seperately with their ranks. 4/3 Another part of the Blackheath. The STAFFORDS are killed in battle; JACK CADE and SMITH enter and exult. 4/4 London. The palace. While KING HENRY studies a supplication from the rebels, QUEEN MARGARET, with the Duke of Suffolk's head, mourns; KING HENRY, the DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM and LORD SAY discuss the uprising. A MESSENGER enters with news of Jack Cade's advance; another MESSENGER enters with more dire tidings; all except LORD SAY prepare to flee London. 4/5 London. The Tower. LORD SCALES and ONE of a group of CITIZENS speak. 4/6 London. Cannon-street. JACK CADE proclaims victory to DICK, SMITH, and others. A SOLDIER enters and is senselessly killed. JACK CADE and his forces exit to the fray. 4/7 London. Smithfield. The loyalists are slaughtered; JACK CADE and his lieutenants swagger and boast. A MESSENGER enters, preceding LORD SAY, the prisoner of GEORGE BEVIS. LORD SAY unsuccessfully argues for his life; he is taken off to be beheaded; his head, and his son-in-law's are brought in. 4/8 Southwark. JACK CADE and a crowd are confronted by the DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM and OLD CLIFFORD; BUCKINGHAM wins the mob to the King's cause; CADE flees; BUCKINGHAM puts a price on Cade'shead. 4/9 Killingworth Castle. KING HENRY complains to QUEEN MARGARET and the DUKE OF SOMERSET; the DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM and OLD CLIFFORD enter and show KING HENRY the humble crowd; KING HENRY thanks his soldiers. A MESSENGER enters to say that the Duke of York is marching on London, declaring the DUKE OF SOMERSET a traitor. KING HENRY sends the DUKE OF SOMERSET to the Tower; the DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM is sent to talk to the Duke of York. 4/10 Kent. Iden's garden. ALEXANDER IDEN comes across the famished JACK CADE raiding his garden; they fight, IDEN winning; the dying CADE reveals his identity. 5/1 Fields between Dartford and Blackheath. The DUKE OF YORK gives vent to his ambitions. The DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM enters and conciliates the DUKE OF YORK with Somerset's imprisonment. KING HENRY, with ATTENDANTS, enters to make peace with the DUKE OF YORK. IDEN enters with Jack Cade's head, and is knighted. QUEEN MARGARET and the DUKE OF SOMERSET enter; the DUKE OF YORK openly claims the kingship; SOMERSET tries to arrest him. AN ATTENDANT is sent for the DUKE OF YORK'S sons; the DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM is sent to fetch Lord Clifford; EDWARD and RICHARD, and OLD CLIFFORD and YOUNG CLIFFORD enter seperately; OLD CLIFFORD supports KING HENRY; EDWARD and RICHARD vow to fight for their father. The EARL OF WARWICK and the EARL OF SALISBURY enter; they recognize the DUKE OF YORK as king. 5/2 Saint Alban's. The EARL OF WARWICK, in battle, hunts Lord Clifford; the DUKE OF YORK enters, soon followed by OLD CLIFFORD; WARWICK exits; YORK and OLD CLIFFORD fight; OLD CLIFFORD dies; YORK exits. YOUNG CLIFFORD enters, mourns his father, and bears off his corpse. RICHARD and the DUKE OF SOMERSET enter, fighting; SOMERSET is slain; RICHARD speaks and exits. KING HENRY, QUEEN MARGARET, and others enter, fleeing; YOUNG CLIFFORD enters, and urges them away. 5/3 Fields near Saint Alban's. The DUKE OF YORK, the EARL OF WARWICK, and RICHARD, with SOLDIERS, seek news of the EARL OF SALISBURY; he enters, and they revel in their victory.
