LORD BARDOLPH enters, followed by NORTHUMBERLAND; LORD BARDOLPH announces Percy's victory. TRAVERS enters; he says he has heard that Percy has been defeated. MORTON enters, bringing news of Percy's death and the capture of Worcester and Douglas; he says the King's forces are advancing against NORTHUMBERLAND and the other rebels. NORTHUMBERLAND is restrained by the others from ordering a rash attack. MORTON says the Archbishop of York has raised an army against the King. 1/2 London. A street. FALSTAFF and the PAGE enter and speak. The LORD CHIEF JUSTICE and his SERVANT enter; the LORD CHIEF JUSTICE berates FALSTAFF. FALSTAFF says he plans to join the King's campaign against the rebels. FALSTAFF sends the PAGE with letters to Prince Henry and others asking for money. 1/3 York. The Archbishop's palace. ARCHBISHOP OF YORK, HASTINGS, MOWBRAY, and LORD BARDOLPH discuss war plans; they decide to attack, since the King's forces are spread thin. 2/1 London. A street. The HOSTESS and FANG enter, followed by SNARE; the HOSTESS asks FANG and SNARE to arrest Falstaff, who owes her money. FALSTAFF, the PAGE, and BARDOLPH enter; all quarrel. The LORD CHIEF JUSTICE and his men enter; the LORD CHIEF JUSTICE orders FALSTAFF to reimburse the HOSTESS. GOWER enters and says that King Henry and Prince Henry are nearing London. FALSTAFF regains the HOSTESS's good graces; they plan to dine together, with Doll Tearsheet. All exit, except FALSTAFF, the LORD CHIEF JUSTICE and GOWER; they speak; FALSTAFF taunts the LORD CHIEF JUSTICE. 2/2 London. Another street. PRINCE HENRY and POINS enter, on their way to the Boar's-Head Tavern; PRINCE HENRY says he grieves inwardly for his father, who is ill. BARDOLPH and the PAGE enter, with a letter from Falstaff to PRINCE HENRY, impugning POINS's character. BARDOLPH and the PAGE exit; PRINCE HENRY and POINS decide to join Falstaff's dinner party disguised as servants. 2/3 Warkworth. Before the castle. LADY NORTHUMBERLAND and LADY PERCY dissuade NORTHUMBERLAND from joining the uprising; he decides to go to Scotland. 2/4 London. The Boar's-Head Tavern in Eastcheap. TWO DRAWERS enter, and speak. The HOSTESS and DOLL TEARSHEET enter, followed by FALSTAFF; they speak. PISTOL, BARDOLPH, and the PAGE enter; PISTOL and the HOSTESS argue. MUSICIANS enter, followed by PRINCE HENRY and POINS, disguised. FALSTAFF makes deprecatory remarks about PRINCE HENRY and POINS. PRINCE HENRY and POINS reveal their identities; PRINCE HENRY and FALSTAFF banter. PETO enters to say the King is in London; PRINCE HENRY, POINS, PETO, and BARDOLPH exit. BARDOLPH re-enters and tells FALSTAFF captains are waiting at the door to accompany him to court. 3/1 Westminster. A room in the palace. KING HENRY soliloquizes on the responsibilities of kingship. WARWICK and SURREY enter; they speak; WARWICK reveals Glendower is dead. 3/2 Glostershire. Court before Justice Shallow's house. SHALLOW, SILENCE, MOULDY, SHADOW, WART, FEEBLE, BULLCALF, and SERVANTS enter; they speak. BARDOLPH enters, and speaks with SHALLOW; FALSTAFF enters, and is welcomed enthusiastically by SHALLOW. FALSTAFF reviews the recruits. FALSTAFF, SHALLOW, and SILENT reminisce on their youths, then exit. MOULDY and BULLCALF bribe BARDOLPH for their release; FALSTAFF, SHALLOW, and SILENT enter; FALSTAFF releases MOULDY and BULLCALF; FALSTAFF and SHALLOW speak. All exit, except FALSTAFF, who makes plans to take advantage of Shallow. 4/1 Yorkshire. Gaultree Forest. The ARCHBISHOP OF YORK, MOWBRAY, HASTINGS, and others enter; the ARCHBISHOP OF YORK reveals that Northumberland has withdrawn to Scotland. WESTMORELAND enters, representing the King; he admonishes the ARCHBISHOP OF YORK for joining the rebels; he states that Prince John of Lancaster is willing to redress any reasonable grievances. The ARCHBISHOP OF YORK gives WESTMORELAND a list of grievances; WESTMORELAND exits. The ARCHBISHOP OF YORK, MOWBRAY, and HASTINGS speak. WESTMORELAND enters; he says the King is near. 4/2 Another part of the forest. MOWBRAY, the ARCHBISHOP OF YORK, HASTINGS, and others enter on one side; PRINCE JOHN OF LANCASTER, WESTMORELAND, OFFICERS and ATTENDANTS enter on the other; the two factions greet each other. A pact is concluded; a rebel OFFICER is sent to disband the insurgent forces; WESTMORELAND exits to send home the King's army. HASTINGS exits; WESTMORELAND enters, and says that the King's army is waiting to be dismissed by PRINCE JOHN OF LANCASTER; HASTINGS enters and says the rebel forces have disbursed. WESTMORELAND and PRINCE JOHN OF LANCASTER arrest MOWBRAY, the ARCHBISHOP OF YORK, and HASTINGS. 4/3 Another part of the forest. FALSTAFF and COLEVILE enter; COLEVILE surrenders to FALSTAFF. PRINCE JOHN OF LANCASTER, WESTMORELAND, BLUNT, and others enter; WESTMORELAND exits. FALSTAFF turns COLEVILE over to his commanders; COLEVILE, made prisoner, exits with BLUNT, and others. All exit, except FALSTAFF, who soliloquizes on the virtues of sherris. BARDOLPH enters; they speak, and exit. 4/4 Westminster. The Jerusalem Chamber. KING HENRY, CLARENCE, GLOSTER, WARWICK, and others enter; KING HENRY is ill; they speak about Prince Henry. WESTMORELAND enters, bringing news of victory. KING HENRY sickens, and is carried out. 4/5 Westminster. Another chamber. KING HENRY lies in bed, attended by CLARENCE, GLOSTER, WARWICK, and others; KING HENRY calls for music. PRINCE HENRY enters; the others exit; believing KING HENRY is dead, PRINCE HENRY places the crown on his own head; PRINCE HENRY exits. KING HENRY awakens; CLARENCE, GLOSTER, and WARWICK enter; WARWICK exits to find Prince Henry, who is assumed to have taken the crown. WARWICK enters, followed by PRINCE HENRY; all exit, except KING HENRY and PRINCE HENRY; KING HENRY berates PRINCE HENRY; PRINCE HENRY responds; the two are reconciled. PRINCE JOHN OF LANCASTER and WARWICK enter; KING HENRY prepares for death. 5/1 Glostershire. Shallow's house. SHALLOW, FALSTAFF, BARDOLPH, and the PAGE enter; they speak. DAVY enters; SHALLOW gives him instructions; DAVY exits, followed by the rest, except FALSTAFF; he soliloquizes on Shallow's gullibility. 5/2 Westminster. The palace. WARWICK tells the LORD CHIEF JUSTICE that King Henry is dead. PRINCE JOHN OF LANCASTER, CLARENCE, GLOSTER, WESTMORELAND, and others enter; the LORD CHIEF JUSTICE says he fears the new king will hold a grudge against him. KING HENRY THE FIFTH enters; he commends the LORD CHIEF JUSTICE doing his duty. 5/3 Glostershire. Shallow's orchard. SHALLOW conducts FALSTAFF, SILENCE, BARDOLPH, the PAGE, and DAVY into the orchard; SILENCE is drunk; DAVY exits, to fetch more wine. PISTOL enters with the news of the King's death; FALSTAFF envisions a grand career for himself under Prince Henry's reign. FALSTAFF and the others hasten to London for the coronation. 5/4 London. A street. TWO BEADLES enter with DOLL TEARSHEET and the HOSTESS; they are taking DOLL TEARSHEET to be whipped; the women and BEADLES struggle. 5/5 A public Place near Westminster Abbey. TWO GROOMS enter and exit, strewing rushes in preparation for the coronation. FALSTAFF, SHALLOW, PISTOL, BARDOLPH, and the PAGE enter, and speak. KING HENRY THE FIFTH enters, with his TRAIN, including the LORD CHIEF JUSTICE; KING HENRY THE FIFTH berates FALSTAFF, forbids him to come within ten miles of his person, but promises FALSTAFF advancement if he reforms; KING HENRY THE FIFTH and his TRAIN exit. FALSTAFF and SHALLOW speak. PRINCE JOHN OF LANCASTER and the LORD CHIEF JUSTICE enter; the LORD CHIEF JUSTICE has FALSTAFF and his companions sent into banishment. All exit, except PRINCE JOHN OF LANCASTER and the LORD CHIEF JUSTICE; PRINCE JOHN OF LANCASTER predicts the new king will march on France. Epilogue A DANCER speaks, promising that Falstaff will appear when the story continues.
