KING HENRY tells WESTMORELAND, BLUNT, and others, that the year-long rebellion is over, and English troops may now be sent to the Holy Land. WESTMORELAND tells KING HENRY that Glendower has defeated Mortimer's forces and taken Mortimer prisoner; WESTMORELAND also says that Hotspur has engaged the Scots, under Douglas, in a fierce battle; KING HENRY says he has heard from Sir Walter Blunt that Hotspur was victorious. KING HENRY says he envies Northumberland his successful son, Hotspur; KING HENRY says Hotspur has refused to send him his prisoners; KING HENRY and WESTMORELAND agree that the Percys pose a threat. 1/2 PRINCE HENRY and FALSTAFF banter; POINS enters; a robbery at Gadshill is planned; FALSTAFF exits. POINS and PRINCE HENRY plot to rob the loot from the others; POINS exits. PRINCE HENRY soliloquizes, rationalizing his unseemly behavior. 1/3 London. The palace. KING HENRY upbraids NORTHUMBERLAND, WORCESTER, and HOTSPUR; he says he is prepared to use force against them. WORCESTER reminds KING HENRY that the Percys helped him gain the throne; KING HENRY orders WORCESTER out; WORCESTER exits. NORTHUMBERLAND speaks conciliatorily; HOTSPUR says he held back the prisoners out of pique; BLUNT speaks up for HOTSPUR. KING HENRY accuses HOTSPUR of keeping the prisoners as a means to secure the ransom of Mortimer; KING HENRY says that Mortimer deserted his forces, and now has married Glendower's daughter. HOTSPUR defends Mortimer. KING HENRY orders HOTSPUR to send him the prisoners; KING HENRY, with BLUNT, and his TRAIN, exits. HOTSPUR and NORTHUMBERLAND speak; WORCESTER enters; citing past wrongs, they work themselves up to revolt; WORCESTER suggests they ally with the Scots and the Archbishop of York to oppose King Henry. 2/1 Rochester. An inn-yard. TWO CARRIERS meet; GADSHILL enters and speaks to the CARRIERS; the CARRIERS exit. CHAMBERLAIN enters, and speaks to GADSHILL. 2/2 The road by Gadshill. With BARDOLPH and PETO some distance away, PRINCE HENRY and POINS take cover; FALSTAFF enters, seeking his horse, which POINS has lead away; FALSTAFF calls for POINS; PRINCE HENRY comes forward, says he will seek POINS, and draws back; FALSTAFF speaks; PRINCE HENRY comes forward; he and FALSTAFF speak. GADSHILL enters, followed by BARDOLPH and PETO; POINS comes forward; PRINCE HENRY and POINS exit. TRAVELLERS enter; the FIRST TRAVELLER speaks; the thieves, led by FALSTAFF, rob them and bind them, then exit. PRINCE HENRY and POINS enter, disguised; they hide themselves; FALSTAFF, BARDOLPH, PETO, and GADSHILL re-enter; as the thieves share the loot, PRINCE HENRY and POINS set upon them; BARDOLPH, PETO and GADSHILL flee, followed by FALSTAFF; PRINCE HENRY and POINS speak. 2/3 Warkworth Castle. HOTSPUR reads a letter from a lord refusing to join the rebellion. LADY PERCY enters; she and HOTSPUR speak; a SERVANT enters, speaks, and exits; HOTSPUR makes his farewell to LADY PERCY, promising she will be sent for the next day. 2/4 Eastcheap. The Boar's Head Tavern. PRINCE HENRY and POINS celebrate; they plan a joke on Francis; POINS exits; when FRANCIS enters, POINS repeatedly calls for him from within; the VINTNER enters and announces that Falstaff and others are at the door; FRANCIS and the VINTNER exit; POINS enters; PRINCE HENRY speaks to him. FALSTAFF, GADSHILL, BARDOLPH, and PETO enter, followed by FRANCIS with wine; FALSTAFF exaggerates the force which robbed them of their booty; PRINCE HENRY calls FALSTAFF on his lies; FALSTAFF says he instinctively recognied PRINCE HENRY. The HOSTESS enters; she announces a royal messenger at the door; FALSTAFF exits to send him away; PRINCE HENRY, BARDOLPH, and PETO speak; FALSTAFF returns with news of the revolt. PRINCE HENRY and FALSTAFF exchange roles, playing at the coming meeting between King Henry and his wayward son. A knocking is heard; the HOSTESS, FRANCIS, and BARDOLPH exit, and BARDOLPH and the HOSTESS re-enter saying that the sheriff and the watch are at the door; PRINCE HENRY tells FALSTAFF to hide; all exit, except PRINCE HENRY and POINS. The SHERIFF and a CARRIER enter; PRINCE HENRY tells them that Falstaff is not there, and that he will assume responsibility for any charges; the SHERIFF and the CARRIER exit. POINS says Falstaff has fallen asleep; POINS goes and searches Falstaff's pockets, finding only a tavern bill; PRINCE HENRY says he will put Falstaff in charge of a troop of foot soldiers; PRINCE HENRY says he will return the stolen money. 3/1 Bangor. The Archdeacon's house. HOTSPUR, WORCESTER, MORTIMER, and GLENDOWER discuss the rebellion; HOTSPUR and GLENDOWER quarrel, until silenced by MORTIMER. They decide how to divide England among themselves. MORTIMER proposes that he, HOTSPUR, and WORCESTER go to join with Northumberland, and that GLENDOWER follow when he gathers his army. A dispute between HOTSPUR and GLENDOWER over the division of the country is settled; GLENDOWER exits. HOTSPUR, MORTIMER, and WORCESTER discuss Glendower. GLENDOWER re-enters with LADY PERCY and LADY MORTIMER; they all converse, except for LADY MORTIMER, who speaks only Welsh. 3/2 London; The Palace. KING HENRY dismisses some LORDS, so he can speak to PRINCE HENRY; KING HENRY berates PRINCE HENRY; PRINCE HENRY replies that he will prove his worth against Hotspur. Reconciled, KING HENRY places PRINCE HENRY at the head of an army. BLUNT enters with news that the rebels have gathered at Shrewsbury. 3/3 Eastcheap. The Boar's Head Tavern. FALSTAFF and BARDOLPH speak; the HOSTESS enters; FALSTAFF accuses her of having his pockets picked, and refuses to pay his bill. PRINCE HENRY and POINS enter; PRINCE HENRY reveals it was he who picked FALSTAFF's pocket; FALSTAFF apologizes to the HOSTESS; the HOSTESS exits; PRINCE HENRY speaks of the coming campaign; BARDOLPH and POINS exit, followed by FALSTAFF. 4/1 The rebel camp near Shrewsbury. HOTSPUR, WORCESTER, and DOUGLAS learn from a letter brought by a MESSENGER that Northumberland cannot join the battle because of illness. SIR RICHARD VERNON brings news of the advance of the King's forces; he also says that Glendower will be delayed; HOTSPUR and DOUGLAS greet this bad news bravely. 4/2 A public road near Coventry. FALSTAFF and BARDOLPH, marching to battle, speak; BARDOLPH exits. PRINCE HENRY and WESTMORELAND enter; they speak with FALSTAFF; PRINCE HENRY, WESTMORELAND, and FALSTAFF exit in turn. 4/3 The rebel camp near Shrewsbury. WORCESTER and SIR RICHARD VERNON argue with HOTSPUR and DOUGLAS that the rebel attack should be delayed. BLUNT enters; he says King Henry is willing to listen to the rebel's grievances; HOTSPUR recounts the aid given to King Henry in the past by the Percys and speaks of Mortimer's claim to the throne; HOTSPUR tells BLUNT that WORCESTER will go meet with King Henry in the morning. 4/4 York. The Archbishop's palace. The ARCHBISHOP OF YORK and SIR MICHAEL speak of the rebels' fading fortunes. 5/1 The King's camp near Shrewsbury. KING HENRY, PRINCE HENRY, LORD JOHN OF LANCASTER, WESTMORELAND, BLUNT and FALSTAFF speak; WORCESTER and SIR RICHARD VERNON enter; WORCESTER recounts the rebels' grievances. KING HENRY says they grievances do not excuse rebellion. PRINCE HENRY offers to settle the matter in single combat with Hotspur; KING HENRY forbids it. KING HENRY says he will pardon the rebels if they disarm; WORCESTER and SIR RICHARD VERNON exit. KING HENRY and PRINCE HENRY agree they rebels will not surrender; KING HENRY, BLUNT and LORD JOHN OF LANCASTER exit. PRINCE HENRY and FALSTAFF speak; PRINCE HENRY exits; FALSTAFF soliloquizes on honor. 5/2 The rebel camp. WORCESTER tells SIR RICHARD VERNON that he will not convey King Henry's peace offer to Hotspur. HOTSPUR and DOUGLAS enter, followed by OFFICERS and SOLDIERS; WORCESTER tells HOTSPUR that King Henry is adamant. WORCESTER tells HOTSPUR that Prince Henry suggested single combat; WORCESTER praises Prince Henry's demeanor. A MESSENGER enters with letters; another MESSENGER enters with the news that King Henry's forces are on the move; all exit to do battle. 5/3 Plain between the camps. KING HENRY enters and exits; BLUNT and DOUGLAS enter; DOUGLAS kills BLUNT, mistaking him for King Henry. HOTSPUR enters; he tells DOUGLAS that he has killed Blunt, not King Henry; HOTSPUR and DOUGLAS exit. FALSTAFF enters; he speaks; PRINCE HENRY enters; PRINCE HENRY berates FALSTAFF for his frivolity, then exits; FALSTAFF speaks on his determination to remain alive. 5/4 Another part of the field. KING HENRY, PRINCE HENRY, LORD JOHN OF LANCASTER, and WESTMORELAND enter; KING HENRY tells PRINCE HENRY and LANCASTER to rest and tend their wounds; they refuse; LANCASTER and WESTMORELAND exit, followed by PRINCE HENRY. DOUGLAS enters; DOUGLAS and KING HENRY fight; PRINCE HENRY enters and fights DOUGLAS; DOUGLAS exits. KING HENRY and PRINCE HENRY speak; KING HENRY exits; HOTSPUR enters; PRINCE HENRY and HOTSPUR fight; FALSTAFF enters, followed by DOUGLAS who fights with him; FALSTAFF drops, as if he were dead; DOUGLAS exits; PRINCE HENRY kills HOTSPUR. PRINCE HENRY addresses the dead Hotspur, then FALSTAFF, whom he believes also has perished; PRINCE HENRY exits. FALSTAFF arises and decides to claim that he killed Hotspur; FALSTAFF picks up Hotspur's body. PRINCE HENRY and LORD JOHN OF LANCASTER enter; PRINCE HENRY says he will support FALSTAFF's false claim; PRINCE HENRY and LANCASTER exit; FALSTAFF speaks, then exits with the body. 5/5 Another part of the field. KING HENRY, PRINCE HENRY, LORD JOHN OF LANCASTER, WESTMORELAND, and others enter, with WORCESTER and SIR RICHARD VERNON as prisoners; KING HENRY orders WORCESTER and VERNON executed. PRINCE HENRY asks to decide the fate of Douglas; KING HENRY grants the request; PRINCE HENRY sends LORD JOHN OF LANCASTER to give Douglas his freedom. KING HENRY plans the further course of the war, sending LORD JOHN OF LANCASTER and WESTMORELAND to battle Northumberland and the Archbishop of York, while he and PRINCE HENRY go to take on Glendower and Mortimer.
