Prologue. The scene is set. 1/1 Troy. Before Priam's palace. PANDARUS discusses Cressida with TROILUS; when PANDARUS exits, TROILUS ponders his situation. AENEAS enters from battle; he and TROILUS speak. 1/2 Troy. A street. CRESSIDA and ALEXANDER discuss Hector and Ajax; PANDARUS enters, and the conversation turns to Troilus. They watch as AENEAS, ANTENOR, HECTOR, PARIS, HELENUS, TROILUS, and the COMMON SOLDIERS pass; CRESSIDA and PANDARUS comment and banter. TROILUS' BOY enters, summoning PANDARUS, who exits; CASSANDRA muses on Troilus. 1/3 The Grecian camp. Before Agamemnon's tent. AGAMEMNON, NESTOR, and ULYSSES, accompanied by MENELEUS and others, discuss the stalemate and Achilles' snit. AENEAS enters and issues a challenge on Hector's behalf; the Greeks approve; all but ULYSSES and NESTOR exit with AENEAS. ULYSSES and NESTOR plot to have Ajax duel Hector. 2/1 A part of the Grecian camp. THERSITES baits an irate AJAX; ACHILLES and PATROCLUS enter; THERSITES upbraids the rest, then exits; ACHILLES tells AJAX of Hector's challenge. 2/2 Troy. Priam's palace. PRIAM, HECTOR, TROILUS, PARIS, and HELENUS discuss returning Helen to the Greeks; CASSANDRA enters; she predicts doom if Helen is kept, then exits; after further talk, PRIAM opts for prolonging the war. 2/3 The Grecian camp. Before Achilles' tent. THERSITES rails; PATROCLUS, and then ACHILLES, enter, to abuse from THERSITES; ACHILLES and THERSITES exit. AGAMEMNON, ULYSSES, NESTOR, DIOMEDES, and AJAX enter, seeking Achilles; PATROCLUS exits to find him; NESTOR and ULYSSES discuss the feud between AJAX and Achilles. PATROCLUS returns without Achilles; AGAMEMNON voices a stern message for Achilles; PATROCLUS exits; AGAMEMNON sends ULYSSES after him. AGAMEMNON and AJAX discuss Achilles; ULYSSES re-enters; AGAMEMNON asks AJAX to speak with Achilles, but the others countermand him; AJAX rails at Achilles; the other's calm AGAMEMNON's ire. 3/1 Troy. Priam's palace. PANDARUS questions Paris' SERVANT; PARIS and HELEN enter; PANDARUS flatters HELEN, who makes him sing a song; after further chatter, PANDARUS exits; the rest go to greet the returning warriors. 3/2 Pandarus' orchard. PANDARUS meets TROILUS' BOY; TROILUS enters, and the BOY exits; at TROILUS' request, PANDARUS exits to fetch Cressida; TROILUS imagines his approaching transports; PANDARUS enters; he and TROILUS speak, then PANDARUS exits, returning with CRESSIDA; PANDARUS encourages the lovers, then exits. TROILUS and CRESSIDA speak; PANDARUS enters and oversees the courtship; they exit, PANDARUS ushering the lovers to bed. 3/3 The Grecian camp. CALCHAS asks AGAMEMNON, ULYSSES, DIOMEDES, NESTOR, AJAX, and MENELEUS to exchange their prisoner, Antenor, for Cressida; AGAMEMNON assigns the exchange to DIOMEDES, who exits with CALCHAS. ACHILLES and PATROCLUS emerge from their tent; on ULYSSES' advice, the Greeks ignore ACHILLES as all, except for ULYSSES, exit; ACHILLES complains; ULYSSES fuels the feud between ACHILLES and Ajax, then exits; ACHILLES and PATROCLUS discuss the situation. THERSITES enters and describes Ajax' posturing; ACHILLES asks THERSITES to bear a message to Ajax; ACHILLES and PATROCLUS exit, followed by THERSITES. 4/1 Troy. A street. AENEAS, with his SERVANT, meet PARIS, DEIPHOBUS, ANTENOR, DIOMEDES, and others, on their way to fetch Cressida; after hearty banter between AENEAS and DIOMEDES, PARIS asks AENEAS to warn Troilus of their approach; AENEAS and his SERVANT exit. DIOMEDES tells PARIS his opinion of Helen. 4/2 Court of Pandarus' house. TROILUS bids CRESSIDA good night; PANDARUS enters and teases them; at a knocking on the door, TROILUS and CRESSIDA exit. AENEAS enters; PANDARUS denies Troilus' presence; TROILUS enters, and AENEAS tells him of the exchange of Antenor for Cressida; TROILUS and AENEAS exit. CRESSIDA enters; PANDARUS tells her the news; she laments. 4/3 Before Pandarus' house. TROILUS, PARIS, DEIPHOBUS, ANTENOR, AENEAS and DIOMEDES enter; TROILUS exits to fetch Cressida. 4/4 A room in Pandarus' house. PANDARUS tries to calm CRESSIDA; TROILUS enters and urges CRESSIDA's faithfulness. AENEAS, PARIS, ANTENOR, DEIPHOBUS, and DIOMEDES enter; TROILUS gives CRESSIDA to DIOMEDES' safekeeping; TROILUS, CRESSIDA, and DIOMEDES exit; at the sound of Hector's entry onto the field, the others exit. 4/5 The Grecian camp. Lists set out. AJAX awaits a challenger, with AGAMEMNON, ACHILLES, PATROCLUS, MENELEUS, ULYSSES, NESTOR, and others. DIOMEDES and CRESSIDA enter; CRESSIDA is greeted by a kiss from each of the Greeks; DIOMEDES and CRESSIDA exit; ULYSSES appraises Cressida. HECTOR, TROILUS, and AENEAS enter, with ATTENDANTS; AENEAS, speaking for HECTOR, arranges terms for the duel; DIOMEDES enters; AJAX and HECTOR prepare to fight. ULYSSES points out TROILUS as Cressida's lover to AGAMEMNON. After a lengthy battle, AJAX and HECTOR agree to a draw; the Greeks and Trojans consort together; all exit, except TROILUS and ULYSSES; ULYSSES agrees to bring TROILUS to Calchas' tent. 5/1 The Grecian camp. Before Achilles' tent. ACHILLES and PATROCLUS speak; THERSITES enters and banters with them; ACHILLES and PATROCLUS exit; THERSITES raves further. HECTOR, TROILUS, AJAX, AGAMEMNON, ULYSSES, NESTOR, MENELEUS, and DIOMEDES enter, and ACHILLES comes out to meet them; after some greetings, AGAMEMNON and MENELEUS exit; when DIOMEDES exits, ULYSSES and TROILUS follow him; the rest are led by ACHILLES to his tent. THERSITES raves. 5/2 The Grecian camp. Before Calchas' tent. DIOMEDES calls to CALCHAS to send out CRESSIDA; TROILUS and ULYSSES enter, unseen, followed by THERSITES. CRESSIDA enters; she greets DIOMEDES familiarly, startling TROILUS; their talk exposes an amour; though urged by ULYSSES to leave, TROILUS remains, fuming; THERSITES comments. CRESSIDA exits, and re-enters with a sleeve, a token from TROILUS, which she gives to DIOMEDES; DIOMEDES exits, soon followed by CRESSIDA; TROILUS rants with jealousy. AENEAS enters, seeking TROILUS, to return him to Troy; TROILUS, AENEAS, and ULYSSES exit; THERSITES comments. 5/3 Troy. Before Priam's palace. ANDROMACHE begs HECTOR not to go to war; CASSANDRA enters and seconds her; as CASSANDRA exits to fetch Priam, TROILUS enters. TROILUS enjoins HECTOR to be less merciful in battle. CASSANDRA and PRIAM enter; PRIAM tells HECTOR not to fight; ANDROMACHE exits, sent out by HECTOR; CASSANDRA rants, then exits, sent out by TROILUS; HECTOR exits to the battle; PRIAM exits. PANDARUS enters with a letter for TROILUS from Cressida; TROILUS tears it up. 5/4 Plains between Troy and the Grecian camp. THERSITES describes the battle. TROILUS and DIOMEDES, who wears the sleeve, enter, then exit, fighting. HECTOR enters, scorns THERSITES, and exits; THERSITES exits, seeking Troilus and Diomedes. 5/5 Another part of the plains. DIOMEDES sends his SERVANT to Cressida with Troilus' horse. AGAMEMNON enters and lists the Greek casualties; NESTOR enters, confirming Patroclus' death. ULYSSES enters and announces that Achilles is arming. AJAX enters and exits, seeking Troilus; ACHILLES enters, seeking Hector. 5/6 Another part of the plains. AJAX and DIOMEDES meet, seeking Troilus; TROILUS enters; the three exit, fighting. HECTOR enters, followed by ACHILLES; after a few words, ACHILLES exits, without fighting; TROILUS enters, then exits to rescue Aeneas; a Greek enters, and is chased out by HECTOR. 5/7 Another part of the plains. ACHILLES instructs his MYRMIDONS; they exit. MENELEUS and PARIS enter, fighting, followed by THERSITES; the combatants exit; MARGARELON enters, challenging THERSITES, who flees; MARGARELON exits after him. 5/8 Another part of the plains. HECTOR lays aside his weapons to rest; ACHILLES and the MYRMIDONS enter and kill him. 5/9 Another part of the plains. AGAMEMNON, AJAX, MENELAUS, NESTOR, DIOMEDES, and other Greeks hear that Hector is dead. 5/10 Another part of the plains. TROILUS enters and tells AENEAS, PARIS, ANTENOR, and DEIPHOBUS that Hector is dead; they mourn him. As the Trojans exit, PANDARUS enters, and is scorned by TROILUS. PANDARUS begs understanding for procurers.
