NYMPHS. Presented by spirits. REAPERS. Presented by spirits. OTHER SPIRITS ATTENDING ON PROSPERO. SYNOPSIS 1/1 A ship at sea; a tempestuous noise of thunder and lightning heard. A SHIP-MASTER and a BOATSWAIN enter and speak; the SHIP-MASTER exits; MARINERS enter and exit. ALONSO, SEBASTIAN, ANTONIO, FERDINAND, GONZALO, and others enter; the BOATSWAIN asks the others to keep out of the way, then exits, followed by the others. The BOATSWAIN re-enters; SEBASTIAN, ANTONIO, and GONZALO re-enter speak to the BOATSWAIN; MARINERS enter and say that the ship is sinking; ANTONIO and SEBASTIAN exit, soon followed by GONZALO. 1/2 The island: before Prospero's cell. PROSPERO tells MIRANDA their history; MIRANDA falls asleep. ARIEL enters and describes how he created the storm, but saved the travellers; PROSPERO and ARIEL speak; ARIEL exits. MIRANDA wakes; ARIEL re-enters as a water-nymph, then exits. CALIBAN enters and complains of his bondage; PROSPERO corrects him; CALIBAN exits. ARIEL, invisible, enters, followed by FERDINAND; ARIEL sings; FERDINAND and MIRANDA fall in love; PROSPERO magically enslaves FERDINAND. 2/1 Another part of the island. ALONSO, SEBASTIAN, ANTONIO, GONZALO, ADRIAN, FRANCISCO, and others enter; GONZALO, ADRIAN, and FRANCISCO try to comfort ALONSO, while SEBASTIAN and ANTONIO mock them. ARIEL, invisible, enters, plays music and puts all but SEBASTIAN and ANTONIO to sleep; ARIEL exits. ANTONIO persuades SEBASTIAN to kill ALONSO; ARIEL re- enters and wakes GONZALO, who wakes the others; the traitors explain their drawn swords by saying they heard beasts. All exit to search for Ferdinand. 2/2 Another part of the island. CALIBAN enters and curses Prospero; TRINCULO enters, thinks CALIBAN is a monster; he takes shelter from the storm under CALIBAN's cloak. STEPHANO, drunk, enters singing; he thinks the other two, under the cloak, form a single monster; he gives CALIBAN drinks. TRINCULO emerges and greets STEPHANO; CALIBAN calls the liquor celestial and assumes that STEPHANO is a god; CALIBAN promises to show STEPHANO the natural treasures of the island. 3/1 Before Prospero's cell. FERDINAND, hauling logs, says he delights in working for Miranda. MIRANDA enters; PROSPERO enters, behind; MIRANDA offers to do FERDINAND's work; he refuses; they admit that they love each other, and plight their troth; FERDINAND and MIRANDA exit; PROSPERO speaks. 3/2 Another part of the island. CALIBAN, STEPHANO, and TRINCULO enter, drunk; TRINCULO mocks CALIBAN, who appeals to STEPHANO; ARIEL, invisible, enters and aggravates the quarrel; CALIBAN asks STEPHANO to kill Prospero, take Miranda, and rule the island. ARIEL plays a tune that compels the others to follow him; they exit. 3/3 Another part of the island. ALONSO, SEBASTIAN, ANTONIO, GONZALO, ADRIAN, FRANCISCO, and others enter; ALONSO and GONZALO speak; ANTONIO and SEBASTIAN conspire. PROSPERO, invisible, enters above; SHAPES, below, bring in a banquet, dance, and exit; as the party prepares to eat, ARIEL enters, as a harpy; the feast disappears; ARIEL accuses ANTONIO, ALONSO, and SEBASTIAN of deposing PROSPERO, then bewitches them; ARIEL exits; SHAPES enter, remove the table, and exit; PROSPERO exits. ALONSO exits in despair; SEBASTIAN and ANTONIO follow; GONZALO speaks. 4/1 Before Prospero's cell. PROSPERO bestows MIRANDA on FERDINAND. ARIEL enters; ARIEL and PROSPERO speak; ARIEL exits. PROSPERO produces a masque to celebrate the betrothal; IRIS enters and speaks; CERES enters and speaks; JUNO enters; JUNO and CERES sing; FERDINAND marvels at the SPIRITS; NYMPHS enter; REAPERS enter and dance with the NYMPHS; PROSPERO abruptly ends the dance; the SPIRITS vanish. PROSPERO says we are what dreams are made of; FERDINAND and MIRANDA exit. ARIEL enters and speaks; ARIEL exits, then re-enters carrying gaudy clothing; ARIEL and PROSPERO become invisible. CALIBAN, STEPHANO, and TRINCULO enter; the Neapolitans grumble, but soon are distracted by the clothes; CALIBAN urges them to concentrate on murdering PROSPERO; SPIRITS in the form of hounds enter and chase the three; PROSPERO and ARIEL speak. 5/1 Before Prospero's cell. ARIEL tells PROSPERO that the royal group are still bewitched; PROSPERO orders their release; ARIEL exits. PROSPERO soliloquizes on his intent to give up magic. ARIEL enters, leading in ALONSO, GONZALO, SEBASTIAN, ANTONIO, ADRIAN, and FRANCISCO; PROSPERO restores their wits; simultaneously, he changes his magic robes for his duke's apparel. ARIEL sings of his approaching freedom, then exits. The amazed courtiers restore PROSPERO's rights; PROSPERO forgives them. PROSPERO discloses FERDINAND and MIRANDA; FERDINAND introduces MIRANDA to ALONSO, who welcomes her. ARIEL enters with the SHIP-MASTER and the BOATSWAIN; the BOATSWAIN says that the ship is miraculously safe. ARIEL exits, then re-enters with CALIBAN, STEPHANO, and TRINCULO; STEPHANO and TRINCULO describe their torments; CALIBAN repents; CALIBAN, STEPHANO, and TRINCULO exit. PROSPERO invites the others to hear the story of his life. PROSPERO frees ARIEL. Epilogue PROSPERO says he has given up his powers and therefore needs the audience's encouragement if he is to return to Naples.
