The HOSTESS and CHRISTOPHER SLY enter and quarrel; the HOSTESS exits; CHRISTOPHER SLY falls into a drunken sleep. A LORD, HUNTSMEN, and SERVANTS enter; the LORD, FIRST HUNTSMAN, and SECOND HUNTSMAN speak; the LORD decides to play a practical joke on CHRISTOPHER SLY; CHRISTOPHER SLY is borne out. A SERVANT exits and re-enters, followed by PLAYERS; the LORD speaks to the FIRST and SECOND PLAYERS; a SERVANT exits with PLAYERS; the LORD speaks. Induction/2 A bedchamber in the lord's house. CHRISTOPHER SLY, the LORD, and ATTENDANTS enter above. The FIRST, SECOND, and THIRD SERVANT, and the LORD persuade CHRISTOPHER SLY that he is a nobleman. A PAGE dressed as a lady enters with ATTENDANTS; the PAGE, CHRISTOPHER SLY, and the LORD speak; a SERVANT enters and speaks. 1/1 Padua. A public place. LUCENTIO and TRANIO speak, then stand aside; BAPTISTA, KATHARINA, BIANCA, GREMIO, and HORTENSIO enter; BAPTISTA says that KATHARINA must be married before BIANCA is; BIANCA exits; BAPTISTA says he seeks tutors for his daughters; BAPTISTA exits, followed by KATHARINA. HORTENSIO and GREMIO agree to find a husband for Katharina, and exit. LUCENTIO says he loves Bianca and will seek the position of her tutor; BIONDELLO enters and speaks to LUCENTIO; LUCENTIO, TRANIO, and BIONDELLO exit. Above, the FIRST SERVANT, the PAGE, and CHRISTOPHER SLY speak. 1/2 Padua. Before Hortensio's house. PETRUCHIO and GRUMIO enter and argue; HORTENSIO enters; they speak about Katharina. GREMIO enters with LUCENTIO, disguised as a schoolmaster; GREMIO and LUCENTIO speak. HORTENSIO suggests that PETRUCHIO woo Katharina. TRANIO and BIONDELLO enter; TRANIO says he will woo Bianca. 2/1 Padua. A room in Baptista's house. KATHARINA bullies and strikes BIANCA; BAPTISTA enters and rescues BIANCA, who exits; KATHARINA complains and exits. GREMIO, LUCENTIO, PETRUCHIO, HORTENSIO, TRANIO, and BIONDELLO enter; PETRUCHIO presents himself as a suitor, and HORTENSIO as a tutor for Bianca; GREMIO presents LUCENTIO as a tutor; TRANIO speaks; a SERVANT enters, then exits with HORTENSIO, LUCENTIO, and BIONDELLO. PETRUCHIO and BAPTISTA settle marriage terms and speak of Katharina. HORTENSIO enters, having been struck by Katharina; all exit, except PETRUCHIO. PETRUCHIO soliloquizes on the strategies of courtship; KATHARINA enters; they banter. BAPTISTA, GREMIO, and TRANIO enter; PETRUCHIO announces his engagement to KATHARINA; KATHARINA objects, but BAPTISTA blesses them; PETRUCHIO and KATHARINA exit. GREMIO and TRANIO compete for Bianca, whom BAPTISTA provisionally pledges to TRANIO; BAPTISTA exits, followed by GREMIO. 3/1 Padua. A room in Baptista's house. LUCENTIO, HORTENSIO, and BIANCA enter; the men argue; HORTENSIO retires. First LUCENTIO, and then HORTENSIO, surreptitiously court BIANCA; a SERVANT enters, exiting with BIANCA. LUCENTIO exits, and HORTENSIO speaks. 3/2 Padua. Before Baptista's house. BAPTISTA, GREMIO, TRANIO, KATHARINA, BIANCA, LUCENTIO, ATTENDANTS, and others enter. BAPTISTA and KATHARINA are shamed by Petruchio's absence; KATHARINA, BIANCA, and others exit; BIONDELLO enters and says that Petruchio is coming, ludicrously dressed and attended. PETRUCHIO and GRUMIO enter; PETRUCHIO responds to BAPTISTA and TRANIO's dismay over his attire; PETRUCHIO and GRUMIO exit, followed by BAPTISTA, GREMIO, and ATTENDANTS. TRANIO and LUCENTIO speak; GREMIO enters and describes the wedding. PETRUCHIO, KATHARINA, BIANCA, BAPTISTA, GRUMIO, HORTENSIO, and TRAIN enter; PETRUCHIO says he intends to take KATHARINA away immediately, despite entreaties to stay; PETRUCHIO, KATHARINA, and GRUMIO exit; the others discuss the match. 4/1 Petruchio's country house. GRUMIO enters and speaks; CURTIS enters, and GRUMIO describes their journey. SERVING MEN (NATHANIEL, PHILIP, JOSEPH, and NICHOLAS) enter, and greet GRUMIO. PETRUCHIO and KATHARINA enter; PETRUCHIO swears at his staff; SERVANTS exit, then re-enter with supper; PETRUCHIO strikes a SERVANT, who exits; a SERVANT enters with water, PETRUCHIO strikes him, and throws the dinner at the SERVANTS, who exit; KATHARINA and PETRUCHIO speak, then exit. SERVANTS (NATHANIEL and PETER) enter, followed by CURTIS; they speak, then exit. PETRUCHIO enters and soliloquizes on taming a shrew. 4/2 Before Baptista's house. TRANIO and HORTENSIO speak, then stand aside, as BIANCA and LUCENTIO enter. BIANCA and LUCENTIO flirt, then retire. HORTENSIO and TRANIO renounce BIANCA; HORTENSIO exits. LUCENTIO and BIANCA advance; TRANIO tells BIANCA that he and Hortensio no longer are her suitors. BIONDELLO enters and speaks; LUCENTIO and BIANCA exit; a PEDANT enters; TRANIO dupes him into acting the part of Vincentio. 4/3 A room in Petruchio's house. KATHARINA, hungry, asks GRUMIO for meat; PETRUCHIO and HORTENSIO enter with meat, which HORTENSIO wolfs down as PETRUCHIO speaks to KATHARINA. A TAILOR enters, followed by a HABERDASHER; PETRUCHIO disparages a new cap and dismisses the HABERDASHER, who exits; PETRUCHIO criticizes a new gown, though KATHARINA praises it; GRUMIO and the TAILOR argue; the TAILOR exits. PETRUCHIO bosses KATHARINA. 4/4 Padua. Before Baptista's house. TRANIO and the PEDANT, dressed as Vincentio, enter and speak; they are joined by BIONDELLO, and then BAPTISTA and LUCENTIO. BAPTISTA and the PEDANT agree on Lucentio and Bianca's marriage; BIONDELLO exits, followed by TRANIO, the PEDANT, and BAPTISTA. BIONDELLO enters; he and LUCENTIO arrange a speedy marriage. 4/5 A public road. PETRUCHIO, KATHARINA, and HORTENSIO enter; KATHARINA contradicts PETRUCHIO, who threatens to return home; she promises always to concur with him. VINCENTIO enters and is teased by PETRUCHIO and KATHARINA; all exit, except HORTENSIO, who speaks. 5/1 Padua. Before Lucentio's house. BIONDELLO, LUCENTIO, BIANCA, and GREMIO enter; LUCENTIO, BIANCA, and BIONDELLO exit for the church. PETRUCHIO, KATHARINA, VINCENTIO, GRUMIO, and ATTENDANTS enter; VINCENTIO knocks on Lucentio's door, but is denied entrance by the PEDANT at the window; BIONDELLO enters; VINCENTIO beats BIONDELLO, who exits; KATHARINA and PETRUCHIO retire. The PEDANT enters below; BAPTISTA, TRANIO, and SERVANTS enter; VINCENTIO fears for his purse and for his son; a SERVANT and an OFFICER enter; GREMIO defends VINCENTIO. BIONDELLO, LUCENTIO, and BIANCA enter; BIONDELLO exits with TRANIO and the PEDANT; LUCENTIO and BIANCA announce they are married; VINCENTIO passifies BAPTISTA, then exits; BAPTISTA exits, followed by LUCENTIO and BIANCA, then GREMIO. PETRUCHIO and KATHARINA advance, speak, and kiss. 5/2 A room in Lucentio's house. BAPTISTA, VINCENTIO, GREMIO, the PEDANT, LUCENTIO, BIANCA, PETRUCHIO, KATHARINA, HORTENSIO, and HORTENSIO's new wife, the WIDOW, await a banquet, which is brought in by TRANIO, BIONDELLO, GRUMIO, and SERVING MEN; all speak; the women exit. When Katharina is called a shrew, PETRUCHIO wagers he can prove she is not. BIONDELLO exits to fetch Bianca, but re-enters without her; BIONDELLO exits again, to fetch the WIDOW, but re-enters without her; GRUMIO exits to fetch Katharina; KATHARINA enters. KATHARINA and PETRUCHIO speak; KATHARINA exits, and re-enters with BIANCA and the WIDOW; KATHARINA describes woman's duty to her husband; PETRUCHIO and KATHARINA exit.
