The DUKE, ESCALUS, LORDS and ATTENDANTS enter; the DUKE prepares for his departure; an ATTENDANT exits; ANGELO enters and is appointed the DUKE's deputy; the DUKE exits. 1/2 A street. LUCIO and two GENTLEMEN enter and banter; MISTRESS OVERDONE enters with the news of Claudio's arrest; the MEN exit. POMPEY enters and discusses the new regime with MISTRESS OVERDONE; they exit. The PROVOST, CLAUDIO, JULIET and OFFICERS enter, followed by LUCIO and the two GENTLEMEN; LUCIO promises to ask Isabella to plead for CLAUDIO's life. 1/3 A monastery. The DUKE explains himself to FRIAR THOMAS. 1/4 A nunnery. FRANCISCA tells ISABELLA the rules of the order and exits; LUCIO enters and persuades ISABELLA to petition Angelo. 2/1 A hall in Angelo's house. ESCALUS urges ANGELO to be lenient, in the presence of a JUSTICE, the PROVOST, OFFICERS and ATTENDANTS; the PROVOST exits. ELBOW, OFFICERS, FROTH and POMPEY enter; ELBOW accuses his prisoners of immorality; ANGELO exits; ESCALUS acquits FROTH, warns POMPEY, and dismisses ELBOW; the three exit successively. 2/2 Another room in Angelo's house. The PROVOST and a SERVANT enter and speak; the SERVANT exits; ANGELO enters and confirms Claudio's sentence; the SERVANT enters to announce ISABELLA, who enters with LUCIO; ISABELLA sues for mercy and is told to return; ISABELLA, LUCIO and the PROVOST exit; ANGELO is tormented by lust. 2/3 A prison. The disguised DUKE asks the PROVOST for permission to comfort the inmates; JULIET enters and repents; the DUKE exits. 2/4 Angelo's house. ANGELO finds he cannot pray; a SERVANT enters, announces ISABELLA, and exits; she enters and ANGELO offers to spare Claudio's life in exchange for her virginity; she refuses; ANGELO exits; and ISABELLA expresses her horror at his duplicity. 3/1 The prison. The DUKE, in the presence of the PROVOST, reconciles CLAUDIO to death; ISABELLA enters; the DUKE and PROVOST exit. ISABELLA quarrels with CLAUDIO over Angelo's proposition. The DUKE enters and again prepares CLAUDIO for death; CLAUDIO exits; the PROVOST enters, speaks and exits. The DUKE and ISABELLA plan to deceive Angelo. 3/2 The street before the prison. The DUKE, ELBOW and OFFICERS condemn POMPEY as a pimp; LUCIO enters and rebuffs POMPEY, who exits with ELBOW and OFFICERS. LUCIO maligns the absent DUKE and exits. ESCALUS, the PROVOST, and OFFICERS enter with MISTRESS OVERDONE whom they have arrested; the OFFICERS and MISTRESS OVERDONE exit to prison. ESCALUS praises the absent DUKE and exits with the PROVOST; the DUKE soliloquizes on hypocrisy. 4/1 The Moated Grange. A BOY sings to MARIANA, then exits. The DUKE enters and greets MARIANA who exits. ISABELLA enters and elaborates on the plot; MARIANA enters and agrees to participate. 4/2 The prison. The PROVOST commissions POMPEY to help the executioner; ABHORSON enters, describes his trade and exits with POMPEY. CLAUDIO enters, is shown his warrant, and exits. The DUKE enters and tells the PROVOST that Claudio will be pardoned; a MESSENGER enters with Claudio's sentence and exits; the PROVOST agrees to substitute a victim. 4/3 Another room in the prison. POMPEY depicts the prisoners; ABHORSON enters and calls BARNARDINE, who enters with a hangover; the DUKE enters but cannot influence BARNARDINE who exits, followed by ABHORSON and POMPEY. The PROVOST enters, discusses the subterfuge with the DUKE, exits, reenters with Ragozine's head and exits. ISABELLA enters and is told her brother is dead; LUCIO enters and sympathises with her; ISABELLA exits. LUCIO boasts of his knowledge of the DUKE. 4/4 Angelo's house. ANGELO and ESCALUS enter and discuss the Duke's return; SCALUS exits; ANGELO considers the consequences of his sin. 4/5 Fields without the town. The DUKE gives letters to FRIAR PETER who exits to deliver them. VARRIUS enters and is greeted by the DUKE. 4/6 Street near the city-gate. ISABELLA and MARIANA discuss their scheme; FRIAR PETER arrives to escort them to the gate. 5/1 A public place near the city-gate. MARIANA, ISABELLA and FRIAR PETER await the DUKE, who enters with ANGELO, VARRIUS, LORDS, ESCALUS, LUCIO, PROVOST, OFFICERS and CITIZENS; the DUKE is welcomed back. ISABELLA denounces ANGELO and is arrested; MARIANA confesses her complicity; the PROVOST exits to look for the friar, and is followed by the DUKE and an ATTENDANT. ESCALUS tries the case; ISABELLA and OFFICERS enter; and the DUKE and PROVOST re-enter. LUCIO slanders the DUKE, whose identity is revealed. ANGELO and MARIANA exit to be married by FRIAR PETER and the PROVOST, and all re-enter. ISABELLA and MARIANA crave mercy for ANGELO; the PROVOST exits and re-enters with BARNARDINE, JULIET and CLAUDIO whom the DUKE pardons. The OFFICERS take LUCIO to be married; and the DUKE sums up.
