The PRINCESS, MARIA, KATHERINE, and a LORD discuss the King and the Navarrese nobles; BOYET enters, with news of their approach. BOYET tells the PRINCESS the King is infatuated with her; BOYET is twitted by the women. 3/1 Navarre. The PRINCESS and BOYET speak, as they go to join the King's hunt with ROSALINE, MARIA, KATHERINE, LORDS, ATTENDANTS, and a FORESTER; the PRINCESS converses with the FORESTER, then rewards him; the PRINCESS speaks of the necessary cruelty of the chase; BOYET responds. COSTARD enters with a letter for ROSALINE, which the PRINCESS asks BOYET to read; remarking that it is addressed to Jaquenetta, BOYET reads the letter from Don Armado; the PRINCESS comments and tells COSTARD of his mistake, then exits. BOYET banters with ROSALINE and MARIA; ROSALINE and KATHERINE exit; BOYET and MARIA banter; COSTARD joins in, and is reprimanded by MARIA, who exits with BOYET; COSTARD soliloquizes on his debut in high society; he exits, drawn by a shout off-stage. 4/2 Navarre. HOLOFERNES, SIR NATHANIEL, and DULL converse; JAQUENETTA and COSTARD enter, with a letter to be read; HOLOFERNES has SIR NATHANIEL read it -- a sonnet from Berowne to Rosaline -- then criticizes his performance; JAQUENETTA and COSTARD exit; HOLOFERNES invites SIR NATHANIEL to dine at a pupil's, and they exit. 4/3 Navarre. BEROWNE ruminates on his love; when the KING enters, he stands aside, to comment on the proceedings. The KING, also love-struck, reads a poem to the Princess; LONGAVILLE enters; the KING steps aside; LONGAVILLE reads a sonnet to Maria, then steps aside as DUMAIN enters; DUMAIN reads an ode to Katherine. LONGAVILLE and the KING confront DUMAIN; BEROWNE comes out and calls them all hypocrites. BEROWNE's triumph is cut short by the arrival of JAQUENETTA and COSTARD, who bear the letter to Rosaline; the KING gives the letter to BEROWNE, who tears it up; when the others pick up the pieces, BEROWNE confesses he too is in love; JAQUENETTA and COSTARD exit, sent away. The nobles disparage each others' ladies, then decide to join forces; BEROWNE voices a lengthy apologia for breaking their oaths, then they depart to woo the Frenchwomen. 5/1 Navarre. HOLOFERNES, SIR NATHANIEL, and DULL plan an entertainment for the King; DON ADRIANO DE ARMADO, MOTH, and COSTARD enter and join in. 5/2 Navarre. Before the Princess' pavilion. The PRINCESS, ROSALINE, KATHERINE, and MARIA discuss the men. BOYET enters, with news of the approach of the Navarrese, disguised; the PRINCESS has the women exchange identities. The KING, BEROWNE, LONGAVILLE, and DUMAIN, dressed as Russians, enter, proceeded by MOTH, with a speech, and BLACKAMOORS playing music. The French confuse MOTH, who cannot finish his flowery speech and exits; the women coyly pair off with each others' lovers to listen to their sweet nothings; the Navarrese exit. The French discuss the encounter, then the women exit; the KING, BEROWNE, LONGAVILLE, and DUMAIN enter, no longer disguised; BOYET exits, sent by the KING for the Princess; BEROWNE demeans Boyet. BOYET re-enters, ushering in the PRINCESS, ROSALINE, KATHERINE, and MARIA; after some teasing, the men are abashed to learn they wooed the wrong women. COSTARD enters and announces the entertainment, to gibes from BEROWNE; BEROWNE convinces the KING to permit the performance; DON ADRIANO DE ARMADO enters, gives the KING a program, then exits; the KING and BEROWNE deride the troupe. COSTARD interrupts to announce that Jaquenetta is pregnant; ARMADO rails at COSTARD, but backs down from a fight, although encouraged by MOTH and the royal party. MONSIEUR MERCADE enters to announce the death of the PRINCESS' father; COSTARD, HOLOFERNES, SIR NATHANIEL, MOTH, and ARMADO exit; the PRINCESS prepares to return home; she refuses the KING's suit, and sets a task for him during her year of mourning; the other Frenchwomen do the same for their lovers. ARMADO re-enters and asks the nobles to hear their finale; HOLOFERNES, SIR NATHANIEL, MOTH, COSTARD, and others enter and sing.
