An open place. VALENTINE takes leave of PROTEUS and exits; PROTEUS muses on his love for Julia. SPEED enters; he and PROTEUS banter; SPEED describes the cold reaction to a message he delivered to Julia. 1/2 Verona. Julia's garden. JULIA and LUCETTA speak of men; LUCETTA gives JULIA Proteus' letter, but JULIA returns it; LUCETTA exits; JULIA, agitated, calls her back, and when LUCETTA re-enters, asks her for the letter, then, after some talk, rips it up; LUCETTA exits; JULIA tries to piece together the letter; LUCETTA re-enters to fetch JULIA for dinner. 1/3 Verona. Antonio's house. PANTHINO tells tells ANTONIO that ANTONIO's brother thinks Proteus should be sent abroad; ANTONIO agrees. PROTEUS enters; ANTONIO tells him to prepare to journey to Milan; ANTONIO and PANTHINO exit; PROTEUS laments; PANTHINO re-enters to fetch PROTEUS. 2/1 Milan. The Duke's palace. SPEED mocks the lovelorn VALENTINE; SILVIA enters, telling VALENTINE he can keep a love letter she asked him to write for her; when SILVIA exits, SPEED marvels that VALENTINE cannot see her ploy. 2/2 Verona. Julia's garden. PROTEUS and JULIA say farewell and exchange rings; JULIA exits; PANTHINO enters to fetch PROTEUS. 2/3 Verona. A street. LAUNCE, with his dog, laments that the animal is not sad at parting; PANTHINO enters to fetch LAUNCE; they banter. 2/4 Milan. The Duke's palace. SILVIA and SPEED set VALENTINE and THURIO at each other. The DUKE OF MILAN enters and announces the arrival of Proteus; VALENTINE praises his friend; the DUKE exits. After more words between VALENTINE, SILVIA, and THURIO, PROTEUS enters and plays the gallant; a SERVANT enters to fetch SILVIA, then exits; SILVIA exits with THURIO. VALENTINE tells PROTEUS of his love for Silvia and their betrothal. When VALENTINE and SPEED exit, PROTEUS reveals he, too, is smitten with Silvia. 2/5 Milan. A street. SPEED and LAUNCE banter, LAUNCE affirming that Proteus and Julia are lovers. 2/6 Milan. The Duke's palace. PROTEUS decides to betray Valentine. 2/7 Verona. Julia's house. JULIA tells LUCETTA she will go to Milan disguised as a boy. 3/1 Milan. An ante-room in the Duke's palace. The DUKE OF MILAN sends away THURIO, who exits, so the DUKE can speak privately with PROTEUS; PROTEUS reveals Valentine's plans to elope with Silvia, then exits. VALENTINE enters; the DUKE tricks VALENTINE into disclosing his plans, then banishes him; when the DUKE exits, VALENTINE laments. PROTEUS and LAUNCE enter; PROTEUS commiserates with VALENTINE; PROTEUS and VALENTINE exit. LAUNCE peruses a list of the points of a certain milkmaid; SPEED enters and mocks LAUNCE's choice. 3/2 Milan. The Duke's palace. THURIO complains to the DUKE of Silvia's increased coldness; when PROTEUS enters, the DUKE asks him to help turn Silvia's affections toward THURIO; PROTEUS agrees. 4/1 A forest. THREE OUTLAWS lie in wait; VALENTINE and SPEED enter; after accosting him, the OUTLAWS ask VALENTINE to be their leader. 4/2 Milan. The court of the Duke's palace. PROTEUS soliloquizes on his unsuccessful courtship of Silvia. THURIO enters with MUSICIANS; he and PROTEUS prepare to serenade Silvia. The HOST enters with JULIA, disguised; they listen to the serenade; after THURIO and the MUSICIANS exit, SILVIA appears at her window and is wooed by PROTEUS, to bitter asides by JULIA; when PROTEUS and SILVIA exit, JULIA and the HOST speak briefly. 4/3 Milan. The court of the Duke's palace. EGLAMOUR awaits SILVIA, who enters at her window; she convinces him to accompany her in flight to Mantua, where she believes Valentine is. 4/4 Milan. The court of the Duke's palace. LAUNCE, again with his dog, describes the animal's misbehavior. PROTEUS and JULIA, still in disguise, enter; PROTEUS hires the "boy", then reproves LAUNCE for offering the wrong dog as a gift to Silvia; LAUNCE exits. PROTEUS gives JULIA the ring she gave him, to take as a gift to Silvia, then exits; JULIA bewails her unhappy situation. SILVIA enters and refuses the proffered ring; JULIA describes the love Proteus left at home; SILVIA gives JULIA money, then exits. JULIA expresses begrudging admiration of Silvia. 5/1 Milan. An abbey. EGLAMOUR awaits SILVIA, who enters; they exit on their journey. 5/2 Milan. The Duke's palace. PROTEUS evasively reports to THURIO on Silvia's feelings towards him, while JULIA comments in asides. The DUKE OF MILAN enters, seeking Silvia and Eglamour; he asks PROTEUS and THURIO to help search for them, then exits; he is followed by THURIO, PROTEUS, and JULIA. 5/3 The forest. The THREE OUTLAWS, with the captured SILVIA, plan to take her to their leader. 5/4 Another part of the forest. VALENTINE soliloquizes on his fate; hearing a noise, he withdraws; PROTEUS, with JULIA in tow, enters with SILVIA, whom he has freed from the robbers; when SILVIA still spurns him, PROTEUS threatens to rape her; VALENTINE comes to her rescue. VALENTINE excoriates PROTEUS, then accepts his apology, even offering SILVIA to him; JULIA faints and, when revived, shows PROTEUS the ring he gave her on parting; JULIA reveals her identity. The OUTLAWS enter with the captured DUKE and THURIO; VALENTINE welcomes the DUKE and threatens the hapless THURIO; the DUKE forgives VALENTINE, presents him with SILVIA and, at VALENTINE's request, pardons the OUTLAWS; the two couples, VALENTINE and SILVIA, and PROTEUS and JULIA, plan a double wedding.
