SYNOPSIS. 1/1 A hall in the Duke's palace. Enter DUKE OF EPHESUS, AEGEON, GAOLER, OFFICERS, and ATTENDANTS. AEGEON tells the DUKE OF EPHESUS the story of his life and is given a day's reprieve. 1/2 The Mart. ANTIPHOLUS OF SYRACUSE, DROMIO OF SYRACUSE, and FIRST MERCHANT speak together. ANTIPHOLUS OF SYRACUSE gives DROMIO OF SYRACUSE money to take to their inn. DROMIO OF SYRACUSE exits. DROMIO OF EPHESUS enters, calls ANTIPHOLUS OF SYRACUSE to dinner, and denies having been given money. ANTIPHOLUS OF SYRACUSE beats DROMIO OF EPHESUS. 2/1 Before the house of Antipholus of Ephesus. ADRIANA and LUCIANA discuss marriage. DROMIO OF EPHESUS enters; he reports Antipholus' odd behaviour. 2/2 The Mart. ANTIPHOLUS OF SYRACUSE beats the bewildered DROMIO OF SYRACUSE. ADRIANA and LUCIANA enter and take ANTIPHOLUS OF SYRACUSE and DROMIO OF SYRACUSE to Antipholus of Ephesus' house for dinner. 3/1 Before the house of Antipholus of Ephesus. ANTIPHOLUS OF EPHESUS, DROMIO OF EPHESUS, ANGELO, and BALTHAZAR enter; they are denied access to the house of Antipholus of Ephesus. BALTHAZAR persuades ANTIPHOLUS OF EPHESUS to dine at an inn. 3/2 Before the house of Antipholus of Ephesus. LUCIANA begs ANTIPHOLUS OF SYRACUSE to be kind to Adriana. ANTIPHOLUS OF SYRACUSE tells LUCIANA he is single and loves her; LUCIANA, appalled, exits. DROMIO OF SYRACUSE enters and says the maid claims to be married to him. ANTIPHOLUS OF SYRACUSE and DROMIO OF SYRACUSE decide to leave the strange town. ANGELO enters and gives ANTIPHOLUS OF SYRACUSE a gold chain. 4/1 A public place. SECOND MERCHANT, ANGELO, and OFFICER enter; ANGELO says he will repay the merchant with ANTIPHOLUS OF EPHESUS's payment for the chain. ANTIPHOLUS OF EPHESUS and DROMIO OF EPHESUS enter; ANTIPHOLUS OF EPHESUS sends DROMIO OF EPHESUS to buy a rope. ANTIPHOLUS OF EPHESUS refuses to pay for the chain, which he does not have. Both ANTIPHOLUS OF EPHESUS and ANGELO are arrested for debt. DROMIO OF SYRACUSE enters and tells ANTIPHOLUS OF EPHESUS that he has made reservations on a ship. ANTIPHOLUS OF EPHESUS sends DROMIO OF SYRACUSE to Adriana for bail money. 4/2 The house of Antipholus of Ephesus. LUCIANA tells ADRIANA about Antipholus' declaration of love. DROMIO OF SYRACUSE enters and collects Antipholus of Ephesus's bail money. 4/3 A public place. ANTIPHOLUS OF SYRACUSE thinks the town is populated by sorcerers. DROMIO OF SYRACUSE enters with the bail money. A COURTEZAN enters and asks ANTIPHOLUS OF SYRACUSE for her ring; ANTIPHOLUS OF SYRACUSE and DROMIO OF SYRACUSE assume she is a witch, and exit. The COURTEZAN assumes Antipholus is mad, and exits to tell Adriana so. 4/4 A street. ANTIPHOLUS OF EPHESUS and an OFFICER meet DROMIO OF EPHESUS, who has a rope, but not the bail money; ANTIPHOLUS OF EPHESUS beats DROMIO OF EPHESUS. ADRIANA, LUCIANA, the COURTEZAN and PINCH enter. ADRIANA denies locking the men out of the house. DROMIO OF EPHESUS denies having the bail money. PINCH says ANTIPHOLUS OF EPHESUS and DROMIO OF EPHESUS are possessed; they are bound and led off. ADRIANA agrees to pay for the chain. ANTIPHOLUS OF SYRACUSE and DROMIO OF SYRACUSE enter, scaring the others off; the Syracusans decide to leave Ephesus immediately. 5/1 Before an abbey. ANGELO apologises to SECOND MERCHANT, as ANTIPHOLUS OF SYRACUSE and DROMIO OF SYRACUSE enter. ANTIPHOLUS OF SYRACUSE and SECOND MERCHANT prepare to fight; ADRIANA, LUCIANA, COURTEZAN, and others enter. ANTIPHOLUS OF SYRACUSE and DROMIO OF SYRACUSE escape into the abbey. The ABBESS enters; she refuses to surrender the two. The DUKE OF EPHESUS enters with AEGEON, the HEADSMAN, and others, on their way to AEGEON's execution. ADRIANA begs the DUKE OF EPHESUS to intercede. A SERVANT enters to say that Antipholus and Dromio have bound Pinch and escaped. ANTIPHOLUS OF EPHESUS and DROMIO OF EPHESUS enter; ANTIPHOLUS OF EPHESUS asks the DUKE OF EPHESUS for help. AEGEON claims ANTIPHOLUS OF EPHESUS is his son; ANTIPHOLUS OF EPHESUS denies it. The ABBESS enters with ANTIPHOLUS OF SYRACUSE and DROMIO OF SYRACUSE; she introduces herself as AEGEON's long- lost wife and the mother of the twin Antipholuses. Gradually, all is explained.
