ORLANDO complains to ADAM that he has been brought up as a peasant, not a gentleman. OLIVER enters; ORLANDO and OLIVER quarrel; ORLANDO and ADAM exit. DENIS enters, announces Charles, then exits; CHARLES enters; CHARLES says he wishes to warn Orlando against wrestling him, but OLIVER says that Orlando deserves to die; CHARLES exits. 1/2 Lawn before the Duke's palace. ROSALIND and CELIA enter and converse; TOUCHSTONE enters; they all speak. LE BEAU enters; he tells them of the wrestling match; DUKE FREDERICK, LORDS, ORLANDO, CHARLES, and ATTENDANTS enter; ROSALIND and CELIA try to prevent ORLANDO from wrestling; ORLANDO and CHARLES wrestle; ORLANDO wins; CHARLES exits; DUKE FREDERICK, annoyed, exits with his TRAIN and LE BEAU. ROSALIND and CELIA speak to ORLANDO; ROSALIND and CELIA exit. LE BEAU enters; he advises ORLANDO to flee Duke Frederick's anger. 1/3 A room in the palace. CELIA teases ROSALIND, who is in love with Orlando. DUKE FREDERICK and LORDS enter; DUKE FREDERICK banishes ROSALIND despite CELIA's pleas, then exits with his LORDS. ROSALIND and CELIA decide to disguise themselves and flee to the Forest of Arden with Touchstone. 2/1 The Forest of Arden. DUKE SENIOR, AMIENS, and LORDS enter, attired as foresters; DUKE SENIOR praises the pastoral life; FIRST LORD tells a story about Jaques. 2/2 A room in the palace. DUKE FREDERICK learns from his LORDS that Rosalind, Celia, and Touchstone have fled; SECOND LORD suggests they may be with Orlando; DUKE FREDERICK orders the LORDS to bring Orlando or Oliver to him. 2/3 Before Oliver's house. ADAM warns ORLANDO that Oliver plans to murder him; ORLANDO says he does not have the money to leave; ADAM offers ORLANDO his savings and his service. 2/4 The Forest of Arden. ROSALIND disguised as Ganymede, CELIA disguised as Aliena, and TOUCHSTONE enter; they collapse with exhaustion. CORIN and SILVIUS enter; they discuss Phebe; SILVIUS exits. ROSALIND, CELIA, and TOUCHSTONE speak together, then ask CORIN for food; CORIN says he is poor, but his master wants to sell a house and land; ROSALIND and CELIA agree to buy it. 2/5 The Forest of Arden. AMIENS, JAQUES, and others enter, speak, sing, and lay out a banquet. 2/6 The Forest of Arden. ORLANDO and ADAM enter; ADAM is weak with hunger; ORLANDO exits to find food. 2/7 The Forest of Arden. A table set out. DUKE SENIOR, AMIENS, and LORDS enter and speak; JAQUES enters and describes a meeting with Touchstone. ORLANDO enters with sword drawn; he is welcomed; ORLANDO exits to fetch Adam. JAQUES describes human life as occurring on a stage. ORLANDO re-enters with ADAM; AMIENS sings; DUKE SENIOR welcomes ORLANDO as Sir Rowland's son. 3/1 A room in the palace. DUKE FREDERICK, OLIVER, and LORDS enter; DUKE FREDERICK says he will confiscate OLIVER's property unless Orlando is turned over to him. 3/2 The Forest of Arden. ORLANDO enters with a poem to Rosalind; he exits. CORIN and TOUCHSTONE enter; they compare court and country life. ROSALIND enters reading a poem; TOUCHSTONE satirizes it; CELIA enters reading another poem; CORIN and TOUCHSTONE exit; CELIA says that Orlando is the poet and is in Arden. ROSALIND and CELIA hide as ORLANDO and JAQUES enter; ORLANDO and JAQUES speak; JAQUES exits. ROSALIND and CELIA approach and speak with ORLANDO; ROSALIND offers to cure him of his love. 3/3 The Forest of Arden. TOUCHSTONE and AUDREY enter, followed by JAQUES; TOUCHSTONE and AUDREY are about to be married by SIR OLIVER MARTEXT, who enters; JAQUES approaches and suggests they be married by a proper priest; JAQUES, TOUCHSTONE, and AUDREY exit in search of one. 3/4 The Forest of Arden. ROSALIND and CELIA enter; ROSALIND is upset because Orlando is late. CORIN enters; he says that Silvius is courting the scornful Phebe. 3/5 The Forest of Arden. SILVIUS and PHEBE enter and speak; ROSALIND, CELIA, and CORIN enter behind them. PHEBE rejects SILVIUS's pleas; ROSALIND advances and disparages PHEBE; PHEBE is enchanted by ROSALIND; ROSALIND, CELIA, and CORIN exit; PHEBE discusses Rosalind with SILVIUS. 4/1 The Forest of Arden. ROSALIND, CELIA, and JAQUES enter and speak; ORLANDO enters; JAQUES exits. ROSALIND and ORLANDO play at being in love; ORLANDO exits; ROSALIND admits she is in love. 4/2 The Forest of Arden. JAQUES, LORDS and FORESTERS enter; they sing. 4/3 The Forest of Arden. ROSALIND and CELIA enter, followed by SILVIUS; SILVIUS gives ROSALIND a letter from Phebe; ROSALIND reads out the love note and sends a stern response through SILVIUS, who exits. OLIVER enters; he tells ROSALIND that Orlando was wounded while saving OLIVER's life, which caused OLIVER to repent; OLIVER shows ROSALIND a bloodstained cloth which Orlando sent to explain his absence; ROSALIND faints, but claims she was just acting. 5/1 The Forest of Arden. AUDREY complains to TOUCHSTONE that they still are not married. WILLIAM enters; they speak together; WILLIAM exits. CORIN enters and calls away TOUCHSTONE. 5/2 The Forest of Arden. OLIVER tells ORLANDO that he and Celia intend to marry and live as shephers; OLIVER bequeaths his fortune to ORLANDO. ROSALIND enters; OLIVER exits; ORLANDO longs for his Rosalind; ROSALIND tells ORLANDO she is a magician and that he shall marry his Rosalind the next day. PHEBE and SILVIUS enter; SILVIUS wants PHEBE; PHEBE wants ROSALIND; ROSALIND says that ORLANDO and SILVIUS will marry their loves and that she will marry no woman if it is not PHEBE. 5/3 The Forest of Arden. TOUCHSTONE and AUDREY enter, anticipating their marriage; TWO PAGES enter and sing. 5/4 The Forest of Arden. DUKE SENIOR, AMIENS, JAQUES, ORLANDO, OLIVER, and CELIA enter and converse; ROSALIND and PHEBE enter. PHEBE promises to marry Silvius if she ever refuses to marry ROSALIND; ROSALIND and CELIA exit. TOUCHSTONE and AUDREY enter and speak. HYMEN enters, leading ROSALIND and CELIA, no longer disguised; explanations ensue and the four couples are married. JAQUES DE BOYS enters; he says that Duke Frederick has repented and retreated from the world, returning the crown to DUKE SENIOR. All but JAQUES decide to return to town after the festivities; JAQUES exits to visit Duke Frederick; all dance and exit. Epilogue ROSALIND says she hopes the play has pleased the audience.
